Tucked away from the crowds of Joo Chiat, I spent my quiet Sunday afternoon at Strictly Pastry chatting with friend, listening to oriental jazz and eating their cakes. Located in a charming corner of eastern Singapore with good food and cultural heritage, Strictly Pastry is a relatively new bakery helmed by Hannah Wong who has been baking since her early teens.

Here, they offer fresh pastries, chocolate fudge, meringue, sweets, treats and the smell of freshly baked pastries. Unfortunately, there is limited seating space as they do mostly takeaways. A signature here is the UGLY SUE ($3 per piece). It is ugly outside but beautiful inside. The crumbly soft meringue is filled with passionfruit mousse, rolled with fresh strawberries, raspberries and blueberries.

We also had the Carribean Sunrise ($7 per slice) which is a crushed pineapple cheesecake with fresh cream and chocolate biscuit base. Pineapple is very mild here but it brings a refreshing take for the cheesecake. In this humid weather, pair it with a glass of Island Balm – a tropical fizzy with fig, guava and honey.

Strictly Pastry also does celebration whole cakes, customised cakes and dessert table services. Conserves and jams from GSH, wine-inspired teas from a.muse projects, nut butters from The Hunters’ Kitchenette and designer terrariums from Green Banana are also featured.
