If you’ve been planning where to go and what to do with your family this school holiday, you should definitely include Quayside Isle @ Sentosa Cove on your list. The picturesque views here make for an unforgettable experience. The large variety of cuisines here will make sure that even the pickiest of eaters will find something.

Schmear

Schmear is an New York slang usually used to describe spreading cream cheese on bagels. Jason, the owner of Schmear, is from New York and he specialises in his own hand-rolled bagels.

collage1
Quayside_isle_Schmear_The_New_Yorker

Jason started from a small oven in his home in Sentosa Cove. His bagels received good feedback from his neighbours and he decided to set up Schmear with his sister, Stacey, who moved all the way from NY to help him in late 2016. With a recipe that has been tweaked nearly 50 times, you’re sure to get bagels of the highest quality here.

You can expect American-sized portions at affordable prices. Their Bagels go for just $3, and if you want to add on their signature ‘schmears’, simply top up $3. Go for exciting flavours like chipotle avocado and jalapeno cheddar or stick to the classics. We heard that the bagels here have been touted the BEST in Singapore, so you really should not miss out on them!

We tried their signature The New Yorker ($8), a bagel sandwich which comes with two fried eggs and melted American cheddar cheese. We would recommend adding on crispy bacon ($3). Bacon just makes everything better, doesn’t it? This was my favourite out of the three that we tried! The slightly salty bagel was chewy and satisfying.

The Southwestern ($11) is an interesting breakfast bagel that contains a dash of sriracha with two eggs, homemade guacamole and tangy pepper jack cheese. We loved the slightly spicy kick from the sriracha and the creamy homemade mashed guacamole. The Central Park ($14) is made for those who prefer seafood. With a generous coating of scallion cream cheese, a hearty helping of lox (smoked salmon) and a light sprinkle of capers, this combination is a crowd pleaser and one that will certainly leave an impression.

We loved their Not So Short Pancake Stack ($16) that comes with two fluffy pancakes, addition of blueberries, strawberries or chocolate chips would require a top up of $4. Those who love their berries and pancakes will naturally gravitate towards this option.

Other than the hearty items, Acai Bowls ($14), Smoothies ($9) and Cold Pressed Juices ($8) are available too. All their ingredients are made from scratch (the burger patties are made from 10kg chunks of beef that’s ground in-house!), guaranteeing an authentic American experience. They will be adding an expanded dinner menu in July after their new executive Chef arrives, so stay tuned!

Blue Lotus – Chinese Eating House

Blue Lotus Chinese Eating House is different from your usual chilli crab hotspots and is definitely a recommended dining destination.

P1120076
3Z3A6016
3Z3A6055

Their Signature Chilli Pomelo Crab ($8/100g) is simmered with lemongrass and ginger flower. The thick gravy has got just enough heat, and appears to be fiery on the first mouthful, but you will start to love it. A whole Sri Lankan crab is stirred into the delicious gravy. The addictive part is paired with pomelo which helps to extinguish the some of the heat. Other crab options include HK Style Bei Fung Tong Crab, Claypot Crab Vermicelli Noodles, Wok Fried Salted Egg Yolk Crab and Steamed Crab with Egg White and Fragrant Oil.

3Z3A6070

To complement the chilli crab, we had the Braised XO Mee Pok ($34). We couldn’t resist the Mee Pok which comes with jumbo king prawns as well.

Let’s Eat!

Quayside_isle_Let's_Eat_Interior

Psst, this is the only Let’s Eat! outlet in Singapore that has Seafood Fried Rice ($8)! This item was added into the menu due to popular demand. Diners can look forward to classic Singaporean dishes like Laksa ($6) and Teochew Fishball Noodles ($5) as well.

3Z3A7433

For the days you’re craving something a bit more hearty, get the Laksa which has a rich and flavourful broth. Authentic traditional local fare is known for its spicy flavours and this bowl of laksa satisfied my craving for something spicy.

34405255853_ca29e53d4a_o

We also got the Teochew Fishball Noodles to share. The fishballs were springy with a nice bite and the noodles did not have an alkaline taste. I especially enjoyed the robust chilli that coated the noodles.

Greenwood Fish Market

Greenwood Fish Market is famous for their yearly Oyster Festival that happens every July. Not only do they have a large selection of oysters, they have a whole lot of seafood as well. They pride themselves on their “sea to table” philosophy, so freshness is an absolute guarantee.

3Z3A7451

The Cold Seafood Platter ($99) features half a steamed Boston lobster, marinated yellow-fin tuna with furikage, freshly shucked Irish regal oysters, New Zealand green lipped mussels, littleneck clams, cooked live tiger prawns and in-house cold smoked salmon. The platter is good for sharing between 2 pax as a main course and 3-4 pax as an appetiser.

3Z3A7468

For the mains, we tried the Fresh Atlantic Cod (under Trawler’s Catch – $34.99) and the Grilled Spanish Octopus ($18.99) which is served with Artichoke and Green Goddess Dressing. The delicate flesh of the cod possessed a pristine freshness and subtle sweetness which won our hearts instantly. The Fresh Fish ($26.99) includes Red Snapper, Sole Fillet, Atlantic Salmon, Barramundi and Tuna Fish. The pan seared Atlantic Salmon tasted extremely fresh. It retained its firmness after cooking and was marinated well.

Greater Lot by Cedele

Greater Lot by Cedele aims to serve natural and wholesome food. Instead of categorising food items under Pasta, Mains or Sandwiches, Greater Lot groups their offerings under ‘Seafood’, ‘Meat’ and even ‘Plant’.

Quayside_isle_Greater_Lot_shopfront
Quayside_isle_Greater_Lot_Cedele_Tumeric_latte

Have you ever tried TURMERIC in your latte? Greater Lot by Cedele offers Turmeric Honey Latte ($5.50) as one of their signature items. The latte has a dark yellow hue and comes with an accompanying pineapple puff pastry which is available on a while stocks last basis.

3Z3A7481

The Buckwheat and Berries Pancakes ($15) is both a vegetarian AND gluten-free (apart from the superfood granola) option. It comes with chia, almond butter from The Hunters’ Kitchenette, maple syrup, and seasonal fresh fruits.

3Z3A7495

Under the ‘Plant’ category, we tried the Mixed Mushroom Garlic Tossed Grains ($14) which is also gluten-free. It has grilled pumpkin, button mushrooms, shimeiji mushrooms, poached egg, sprouts and 3 types of grains – organic brown rice, sorghum and tri colour quinoa tossed with aromatics. The grains were so flavourful that I could eat them on their own!

Quayside_isle_Greater_Lot_Cedele_Super_Good

Super Good ($11) is a comforting smoothie bowl that contains the Amazon superfood acai, seasonal berries, yogurt and raw honey. The smoothie base is then topped with their oven-roasted granola, more fresh fruits, toasted nuts and shredded coconut. It was a refreshing addition to our meal, and undoubtedly a great pick-me-up on hot days!

Mykonos On The Bay

Mykonos is known for their summer party atmosphere and the iconic white and blue shades that blanket the city. While the Mykonos On The Bay is more of a place to chill-out, it is still covered in white and blue.

Quayside_isle_Mykonos_Shofpront
35049000662_e53aef5387_o

We started our meal with Tzatziki ($14), a yogurt spread salad with garlic, cucumber and dill, Melitzanosalata ($14), which comprises grilled eggplant “caviar”, fresh herbs, garlic, olive oil and greek yogurt, and Taramosalata ($15.50), a traditional fish roe spread salad served with herb prawns, “lagana” bread and olive oil. Our favourite has got to be the traditional fish roe spread that was slightly salty and creamy.

3Z3A7513

Originating from the Middle East, Mousaka ($27) is a Mediterranean dish served warm with top layer of creamy béchamel sauce. Layers of beef and eggplant are cooked separately before being put together and baked till the top layer is browned. We loved the creamy béchamel sauce that brought the layers of the dish together.

3Z3A7519

“Gyro” in Greek means ‘going around’, which essentially stands for the way that the dish is cooked. The Pita Gyros ($27.50) comes with thin and crispy melt-in-your-mouth pork belly shaves, sweet onion, and creamy tzatziki wrapped in pita bread. The whole combination worked well together and was gratifying to bite into.

SolePomodoro Trattoria Pizzeria

Quayside_isle_Sole_Pomodoro_Shopfront

SolePomodoro Trattoria Pizzeria, specialises in pizzas and pastas. They bake their pizzas in a traditional wood-fired oven!

Quayside_isle_Sole_Pomodoro_Crudo_E_Recola

We tried the Crudo E Rucola ($25) which comes with tomato sauce, mozzarella, Parma ham and rocket salad. They were really generous with the portion of Parma ham and arugula.

Quayside_isle_Sole_Pomodoro_Spaghetti_Al_Fruitti_De_Mare

The Spaghetti Al Frutti de Mare ($24) contains a wide variety of seafood and might just tickle the fancy of seafood lovers.

Museo

Museo has a unique dine-in-a-cup concept, where food is served in glass cups. We were served a complimentary appetizer of fried popiah skin, which was surprisingly tasty! While waiting for your food to arrive, unleash the inner child in you and get creative by doodling on the placemats with the markers provided.

3Z3A7542
iPiccy-collage1
3Z3A7549

The Smoked Roast Pork Belly ($12) was served with hot sauce and German mustard and is one of the most highly recommended dishes here.

Fried to perfection without being too oily, the Soft Shell Chilli Crab ($14) with sweet and savoury Tomato-Chilli Sauce was a winner. We couldn’t stop mopping up the ‘chilli crab’ sauce with the soft shell crab!

How does capellini tossed with tobiko, truffle shavings, chives and Shio Konbu sound? The Cold Pasta ($11) has a strong truffle aroma that hit us before the dish even arrived at our table. Remember to toss the mixture well to distribute the flavours evenly!

Quayside_isle_Museo_Grilled_NZ_Lamb_Rack

Lastly, we had the Grilled NZ Lamb Rack ($16) served with Pineapple Salsa. I am not a fan of lamb as it usually is too gamey for me. However, the well-executed lamb at Museo surprised me with its tenderness and absence of that distinct gaminess.

Joe & the Juice

Quayside_isle_Joe_And_The_Juice_Interior
DSCF5001

Founded in Denmark in 2002, Joe & The Juice has 3 outlets in Singapore, and 2 in Hong Kong. They focus on both nutrition and entertainment. Think nutritious juices, paired with a personalised touch by the baristas.

We tried the Sports Juice ($7.20 for 12oz/$9.20 for 16oz), which is one of their most popular juices, especially with gym-goers. It is an after-workout drink consisting of pineapples, passion fruit and apple.

Quayside_isle_Joe_And_The_Juice_Tunacado
Joe-and-the-Juice-Ginger-shot

As pineapple and passionfruit aid in protein absorption, we recommend that you grab a cup together with the protein-rich Tunacado ($11.50) sandwich. Made with rye-grain bread, the Tunacado comes with tuna, avocado and slices of tomato. Simple, but delicious.

Another popular juice is the Pick Me Up ($7.20 for 12oz/$9.20 for 16oz), a blend of raspberry, banana and apple, which contains 16 different types of vitamins. I was really sleepy after lunch and Ginger Shot ($3 for 2 oz) is a surefire way to wake up the senses! When juiced with sweet apples, it increases the nutritional content while adding a pleasantly spicy taste.

Miska Cafe

5-year-old Miska serves up Mediterranean food and its name means ‘gift from the God’. It is a simple restaurant with a surprisingly extensive menu.

Quayside_isle_Miska_Shopfront
3Z3A7573

The Doner Chicken ($21) is one of their signature gourmet wraps. It is a harmony of grilled chicken slices, romaine lettuce, onion, tomato, tzatziki sauce and spicy sauce (optional).

34962939341_81b35f78b3_o

The Seafood Grill ($44) is a tantalising outfit of marinated and grilled salmon, fish fillet, squid, king prawns and 2 sides. The salmon was grilled to a crisp finish and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

3Z3A7585

Look forward to Miska’s new menu, which will include Chef’s Specials such as a 15-inch pizza with classic toppings like pepperoni, Hawaiian, vegetarian and BBQ chicken. The pizza had a crisp crust and doughy insides. Our favourite was the BBQ chicken with succulent chicken slices and juicy button mushrooms.

Two Chefs Bar

Mexican and Italian flavours came together to form the foundation of Two Chefs Bar. While you indulge in the unique combination of hearty Mexican and Italian cuisine here, be sure to check out their impressive bar menu and don’t forget to grab a craft beer, or two.

Quayside_isle_Two_Chefs_Bar_Shopfrontcollage5

The popular Chicken Fajitas served with guacamole, red salsa, shredded cheese and warm flour tortillas ($25) stood out especially. I liked that they let us wrap the sizzling chicken slices ourselves, as we could control the amount of guacamole and red salsa to add to our tortillas. Also, the chicken slices were kept warm throughout our meal!

3Z3A7631

The Classic Crab Pasta ($26) is one of their signature pastas. It sees linguine cooked in a sweet and spicy tomato vodka sauce with chunky crab meat.

3Z3A7617

Corleone Pizza ($26) features a crispy thin crust pizza topped with tomatoes, mozzarella, parma ham, rocket salad and parmesan cheese. Their dough is handmade fresh everyday without compromise.

Sabio by the Sea, Tapas Bar & Grill

collage3
Quayside_isle_Sabio_By_The_Sea_Paella_De_Pescado

Sabio By The Sea, Tapas Bar & Grill focuses on Spanish tapas, seafood and grilled meats. Their Paella de Pescado ($29/$49) comes loaded with calamari, sea bass, clams, mussels and shrimps. The best part was the slow-cooked Spanish short-grained rice which was moist but firm.

Quayside_isle_Sabio_By_The_Sea_Gambas_Pil_Pil

Gambas Pil Pil is one of the most popular tapas at Sabio. It consists of prawns served in a sizzling mix of chilli, olive oil and garlic. I believe that you will fall in love with the crunchy prawns, like I did!

Quayside_isle_Sabio_By_The_Sea_Chorizo_Salad

The Chorizo Salad is yet another item that you should not miss out on.The combination of sundried tomatoes with chorizo is a match made in heaven. The flavours is balanced with crisp croutons and soft egg.

Both the Gambas Pil Pil and Chorizo Salad are also available on the a la carte menu at $19 and $18 respectively, in addition to being part of Sabio’s Hangover Brunch ($59.90++ per pax) served every weekend from 11.30am-3.30pm. Other items include Grilled Tuna Steak and Deep Fried Oysters.

Gin Khao Bistro

Did you know that watermelon fried rice is an authentic Thai dish found commonly at roadside stalls? Frankly, warm watermelon sounds rather strange. However, the watermelon balls add a sweetness that might just dazzle you.

Quayside_isle_Gin_Khao_Thai_Shopfront
3Z3A7668

Brought in by Gin Khao in 2015, the Khao Phat Dtaeng Moe ($14.80/$25.80) is the most famous dish here. Served in a carved watermelon bowl, the fried rice comprises chicken floss, cashew nuts, fried beancurd strips and fresh seafood. The fried rice had plenty of wok hei, and we would be lying if we said we didn’t enjoy it.

3Z3A7675

We also gave the Kang Ob Woon Sen ($20.80) a go. The glass noodles soaked up the Thai garlic and pepper sauce really well and the juicy crayfish was adequately flavourful. I liked that they used authentic Thai garlic, which is smaller and stronger compared to the local version.

3Z3A7663

The Deep Fried Sea Bass with Thai Sauce ($23.80) was crispy on the outside yet soft and flaky on the inside. Perfect as an appetiser for a hungry family!

Earl of Hindh

Quayside_isle_Earl_of_hingh_Shopfront

Located on the 2nd level, Earl of Hindh is an Indian fine dining restaurant serving quality North Indian cuisine. It sports a colonial look, and even the flooring rocks a traditional pattern.

Quayside_isle_Earl_Of_Hindh_Lamb_Chop

We tried the Shahi Lamb Chop ($43) which is marinated with a special potli masala and malt vinegar. At $43 for 4 pieces, the meat is grilled just right with lovely pink centres and a nice roasted glaze on the exterior. I will also recommend the Malai Chicken Kebab ($29).

Quayside_isle_Earl_Of_Hindh_Olive_Chilli_Cheese_Bread

Their signature item, the Earl of Signature Rampuri Paratha ($8), is an exotic multi-layered bread stuffed with red chilli flakes and baked in Tandoor, a clay-type oven used in Northern India. If you like cheese, go for the Olive Chilly Cheese Bread ($10) which is thicker and chewier.

Butter Chicken ($35) is a must-order at Indian restaurants. The one here is no exception. Chicken Tikka is tossed in tomato, butter, cream and cashew gravy, and served with ginger juliennes and a swirl of cream. I liked that it wasn’t too thick or heavy.

7 Interesting International Halal Cuisine (Which is your favourite?)

$

The practice of fasting during Ramadan means that Muslims may not eat or drink anything, including water, while the sun is shining. Besides indulging in the usual nasi padang, or mee soto, after you break fast, here are 7 interesting international Halal cuisines you can consider trying with your friends and family.

Muk-Bang Korean Restaurant

You can expect an array of Halal Korean dishes such as Budae Jjigae ($36) and Haemul Pajeon ($16) here. The former boasts a fiery spicy army stew which contains chicken, chicken ham, chicken sausage, Korean rice cakes, baked beans, an assortment of mushrooms, tofu, kimchi, ramen, and a slice of cheese. The latter is a seafood pancake with fresh prawns and squids. The batter is not too dense, and the pancake has a nice bite to it.

Hararu Izakaya

Hararu’s lunch menu offers diners a variety of 4 different donburi sets. When night falls, Hararu changes into a Japanese bar and their dinner menu showcases Japanese skewers and other ala carte items. The Unagi Don ($13) features grilled eel with Teriyaki sauce, tamago, pickles and rice. The eel is grilled just right and the meat is tender, boasting a rich and sweet flavour. The Salmon Teriyaki Don ($12) contains grilled salmon with Teriyaki sauce, tamago, pickles and rice. The silky salmon skin with slightly charred edges is very enjoyable.

The Dim Sum Place

You will find Halal Cantonese-style cuisine infused with local flavours here. The Vermicelli Roll with Lamb Rendang ($8.90) is unique, and the thick gravy intensely flavoured. We also like the Pan Fried Taro Cake ($2.90 / 3 pieces), Pan Fried Carrot Cake ($2.90 / 3 pieces), as well as the Traditional Egg Tarts ($3.90 / 3 pieces). They look so dainty in an oriental-looking “basket”. The slightly flaky pastry encased a sunny yellow egg custard which tasted as good as it looks.

Pho 4 U

This Halal Vietnamese eatery serves a variety of pho, and other Vietnamese dishes. Pho 4A ($10) is a beef noodle soup with half-cooked steak, well-done brisket, flank and meatballs. Add some fresh greens in for a nice textural crunch in every bite. They are quite generous with the serving of beef, but we thought the broth could have been more robust and flavourful.

The Ramen Stall

You’ll be spoilt for choice dining at The Ramen Stall. We went for their signature Volcano Ramen ($11) which allows diners to choose their desired level of spiciness – 1 being the least spicy and 3 being the most. We had level 2, which we would only recommend for chilli lovers. Each mouthful caused an eruption of fiery flavours. Unfortunately, the natural flavours of the original chicken broth were masked by the chilli. We would have liked the broth more if it had a better balance of spiciness and its original flavour.

Koh Nangkam

Koh Nangkam is an island located in the Southern part of Thailand. The majority of settlers there are Muslims. Owner Madam Chamchiyah Hodsub was brought up in Koh Nangkam, and she has brought over her own family recipes, and other popular Thai dishes to her restaurant located near Bugis. The Tom Yum Soup ($8/$13/$16) comes with fresh prawns, squids, and sweet, juicy tomatoes. It wasn’t as spicy nor as tangy as we expected. Perhaps, we should’ve tried other dishes.

Afterwit

Afterwit was inspired by an afterthought of pairing Mexican-influenced fare with an indie café experience. The interior is decorated with a vibrant Mexican flair(think bold colours and rustic furnishings). It’s a great after-work hangout, especially for those with a penchant for spicy flavours. From quesadillas to tortilla pizzas, to tacos, to burritos, there is definitely something for everyone. On weekdays, you can look forward to their Locos Lunch that’s available from 12pm to 3pm.

Cafe culture is a global widespread, and it’s no longer surprising to hear your friends and family hopping from one cafe to another over the weekends. With so many cafes popping up nowadays, chefs have to constantly offer something unique and different to attract the diners. We’ve sussed out 8 interesting items that are currently trending at cafes in Singapore.

Everyone say CHEEEEESE

Molten Lava Cheese Burger ($25) from The Benjamins allows you to pick your choice of beef, fried chicken or soft-shell crab to be served with ciabatta buns. As you split the ciabatta buns apart, a small amount of nacho cheese flows out. It isn’t as creamy and savoury as we expected, and the taste of cheese isn’t overwhelming. Pair your cheesy items with an awesome glass of ice-cold Coca-Cola for that perfect finish.

Anything with Mentaiko

Salmon Samurai’s Salmon Mentaiko with Udon ($9.90) has 5 slices of fatty salmon sashimi sitting atop the thick, chewy udon. The salmon sashimi are sliced to the right thickness, and taste very fresh. However, the highlight for us is the gloriously torched mentaiko cream, which gives the dish a rich flavour. For a heartier meal, you can add other toppings such as onsen egg ($1), half an avocado ($1.50), or ebiko ($1).

Going Local

Some cafes, such as Revolution Coffee, are bringing local food into the hipster scene. Nasi Lemak here is steamed with fresh coconut every day, instead of being thrown in a rice cooker with coconut milk. Only the best Fragrant Jasmine rice is used and each grain of rice is distinct and fluffy but richly lemak. The Nasi Lemak rice sets feature dishes such as crispy pork, crispy fried chicken, 5-spice pork confit, beef rendang and chicken rendang.

Each set comes complete with the Nasi Lemak rice, omelette, ikan bills, homemade sambal belachan and coffee sambal on cucumber slices. The price of nasi lemak ranges from $4.90 to $9.90. The sambal caused us to perspire through our meal. Hence, we like having this Nasi Lemak with a glass of ice-cold Coca-Cola as we felt that it helps us bring the level of spiciness down.

Gyu-Don

Grilled beef (medium or well done) and onsen tamago sits atop Japanese rice for this tantalising dish. There are a couple of cafes serving gyudon, but we really like the one from 9² Coffee House & Bar which is affordably priced at $13.90. The beef is nicely grilled, such that it still retains its juiciness and tenderness. It is also marinated quite well. Our favourite is the runny egg yolk that oozes out so seductively! However, even after a good toss, the rice still tastes bland and its texture is too mushy.

Everything Matcha

Chocolate, it’s time to move aside as Matcha has taken over most of our tastebuds. There’s been an increase in Matcha Latte and Matcha Pancakes at cafes islandwide, and we even found Matcha Burger at I AM Cafe.

Charcoal-Grilled ‘The Quest’ Burger ($18.90) consists of I AM’s signature charcoal-grilled beef patty marinated with 7 different herbs, topped with turkey bacon, in-house special spicy avocado spread, a dash of truffle mayo and BBQ sauce stacked between Matcha infused buns. You can’t really taste the Matcha, but the buns are fluffy with crispy edges, done just the way we like. We enjoy having a glass of ice-cold Coca-Cola with this juicy, sumptuous burger, imagine the refreshing rush of a fizzy glass of Coca-Cola as you relish the potpourri of flaours – simply great.

Fusion Food

Besides introducing local delights at cafes, some cafes are infusing local flavours into their western dishes for that unique twist. This East-meets-West creation can be found at Redpan. The ‘Bak Chor’ Foie Gras Pasta ($19) is more savoury than tangy as there isn’t much vinegar added in. Topped with minced pork, with a luxurious touch of foie gras, our ordinary mee pok just got more decadent. The tagliatelle manages to absorb the pasta sauce, and the foie gras and seared pork belly are really tender.

Pulled Pork Dishes

Pulled Pork Pancakes ($14) from Stirling Highway is made in-house. Pulled pork is piled between three buttermilk pancakes, and served with house made BBQ sauce and whiskey infused maple syrup. The pancakes are well prepared – buttery, a little moist, and not too dense. It’s great on its own, even without pulled pork. But, those who prefer savoury over sweet food will like this pulled pork version. Savour these pancakes with a can of fizzy Coca-Cola, the ice-cold drink completes our meal on a good note.

Rainbow Food

Having a rainbow burger at Word Bistro makes you dream of riding a unicorn, and dancing with fairies. The eye-catching Handsome Burg ($20) consists of bacon, onion, kale, and a thick succulent beef patty slathered with house-made spicy peanut butter sauce stacked between 2 colourful buns with texture resembling that of bagels. This savoury delight is a comfort food, and the vibrant colours puts us in a good mood.

Nadai Fuji Soba Ni-Hachi – First soba specialty store in SG!

Noda_ Fuji_Soba_Ni-hachi_Shopfront

Heralded as Japan’s best soba restaurant, Fuji-soba boasts a massive chain of 116 stores in Japan and 10 in Taiwan and the Philippines. In celebration of their 50-year anniversary in 2016, Fuji-soba opened their first outlet in Singapore. Keeping to the same beloved recipe used in Japan, Fuji-soba promises a rich broth with slurp-worthy soba noodles made with a 2:8 ratio (Ni-Hachi means 2:8) of wheat flour to buckwheat flour. Well known as a superfood because of the high fibre and anti-oxidant content, buckwheat is known to relieve high-blood pressure and promote healthy glowing skin amongst a slew of other health benefits. Who knew healthy food could be tasty too?

Noda_ Fuji_Soba_Ni-hachi_Interior

Fuji-soba offers patrons a diversity of sobas – warm, dry, and cold with a dipping sauce on the side. So, you’re bound to find a soba dish that will appeal to you! If you prefer thicker noodles, you can choose to switch up soba for their handmade udon for free! Fuji-soba’s Dashi stock is made from dried Japanese bonito (fish stock). Every soba dish is a rich and flavourful bowl that screams umami. We were also informed that that their soba is made in-house daily from Japanese soba flour and shaved bonito flakes to guarantee a bouncy texture. Some of the interesting items on the menu include hot cream-based soba, duck soba and even curry soba! If you’re more of a rice person, they also serve a small selection of rice dishes like Unagi Don ($27++) and Sukiyaki Don ($15++). We were also impressed with their selection of Japanese drinks which includes ice cold Japanese beers, Sake, Umeshu and even a Suntory whisky highball beside the usual juices, coffees and teas.

Noda_ Fuji_Soba_Ni-hachi_Dry_Mentai_Maze_Soba_Scoop

We tried their dry mentai maze soba ($14++) which consists of thick soba noodles coated in a rich mentaiko-filled cream. The noodles are topped with spring onions and seaweed for an extra crunch. The Japanese mentaiko lends a mild spice and sweetness without overpowering the creamy soba. While it was listed as a dry soba, the cream keeps the noodles chewy and moist throughout the meal. Owing to the thick soba, this dish was unassumingly generous and will definitely fill your tummy. While some may find this a little jelat, you’ll love it just as I did if you enjoy cream-based pastas like carbonaras or alfredos.

Nodai_Fuji_Soba_Ni-Hachi_Scoop

Ever had duck meat soba? The hot kamo nanban soba ($18++) which features thin soba noodles, duck slices and duck meat balls swimming in a bowl of deep-coloured broth topped with snap peas and yuzu, is one of the bestsellers here.

Nadai_Fuji_Soba_Ni-Hachi_Duck_Slice

Duck meat is known to be a little tough when cooked through, hence Fuji-soba serves the duck slices shabu-shabu style to prevent them from being overcooked. Ergo, you can choose how well cooked you like your duck to be. Mine was cooked till medium and I loved how the fatty duck slices just melted in my mouth. While the thin soba noodles were softer in texture in comparison to the thick soba noodles, I found the thickness of the noodles to be just perfect. The soba noodles absorbed the rich broth adequately, making it immensely slurp-worthy! Unlike factory-made meat balls, the juicy duck meat balls were well seasoned and had a toothsome bite.

Nadai_Fuji_Soba_Ni-Hachi_Dashi

My only reservation about this dish was that the broth was a tad too salty for my liking. However, I was delighted to find that Fuji-soba thoughtfully offers every table a flask of light-bodied dashi broth to customise your broth just the way you like it. We added 1 part of the light dashi broth to 2 parts of the actual broth and loved it.

Albeit the somewhat higher price tag, neither of the soba dishes disappointed. We loved the quick and friendly service and I’ll be back to try the other soba variants like the curry soba which I’ve been eyeing. Whether it’s a day out with family or friends, Fuji-soba has something for everybody. And if you’re in the mood for it, they’ve even got an ongoing Kamo Nabe (Duck hot pot) promotion (min 2 pax, $30 per pax) during dinnertime on weekdays and the weekends! Not soba-d afterall right?

YY Ka Fei Dian – One of the Best Kaya Buns in Singapore

YY Ka Fei Dian – 不要想歪歪喔 (please don’t think dirty). That’s just a joke! Back to topic, this coffeeshop is very crowded during lunchtime on weekdays. We were surprised when we were shown their extensive menu. From seafood to meat, to noodles, to rice, this coffeeshop has got your lunch fix covered. However, the real star here is their soft kaya buns!

yy-ka-fei-dian-kaya-buns

Baked in-house, these buns boast a crisp light crust and a fluffy and super soft interior. A generous amount of kaya is spread on the soft buns, before they are topped with a slab of savoury butter. We love the texture of the soft buns and the coconut-infused kaya enhanced the overall taste. Get the set ($3.70) which comes with an aromatic cup of kopi and two soft-boiled eggs for a simple but great breakfast!

yy-ka-fei-dian-chicken-rice

Since the coffeeshop is popular for its traditional Hainanese fare, we decided to try the Chicken Rice ($4). The chicken is tender and succulent, and there’s a nice silky layer of gelatine under the skin which some of you might like. The rice is aromatic and has a good consistency, complementing the chicken well. This dish is pretty decent, but there’s nothing to rave about.

yy-ka-fei-dian-hainanese-pork-chop

The other classic Hainanese dish served here is the Hainanese Pork Chop ($9/$12/$15). We like pairing this with the chicken rice, which brings us back to our childhood days. Unfortunately, the lean pork cutlet is a little on the dry side, though the tomato sauce has a balanced mix of tanginess and sweetness.

yy-ka-fei-dian-claypot-e-fu-noodles

The other dish that is highly recommended by customers at YY Ka Fei Dian is the Claypot E-fu Noodles ($5.50). A generous portion of piping hot e-fu noodles and a good variety of ingredients such as vegetables, yam cubes, and prawns, are drenched in a thick, gooey, and flavoursome sauce. It is then topped with a glorious egg. The noodle has a nice bite, and isn’t too mushy. For the portion, this dish is value-for-money.

If you happen to work nearby, you should give their kaya buns a try! Treating your colleagues to a meal but don’t want to burn a huge hole in your pocket? You can consider YY Ka Fei Dian as there’s bound to be something for everyone. Well, that’s if you don’t mind a non-airconditioned environment.

7 Awesome Places to get Unique Maki (that isn’t California Maki!)

$
0
0

Makis are often overlooked in favour of sashimi, tempura, or even the more common sort of nigiri sushi. The word Maki comes from the word ‘maku’, which means to roll or wrap ingredients, usually in seaweed (nori). Choose from this list of 7 Makis when you’re craving something more unique than California Makis!

Senmi Sushi

First up on the list is Dynamite Maki ($16.80) from Senmi Sushi, a store inside Emporium Shokuhin at Marina Square. The Dynamite Maki contains torched wagyu beef, ebi tempura, and avocado, drizzled with Senmi’s secret sweet and smoky sauce.

I like that the flakes on top did not get soggy and provided a nice crunch. The thinly sliced and torched wagyu beef had melted cheese on top, which went well with the beef. The beef was cooked well without being too tough. Inside the maki, the avocado is wrapped around the ebi tempura.

Japanese Curry Express

“Maki only after 12.30pm!” And our faces fell. Note that even though this small eatery in Fortune Centre opens at 11.30am, their makis are only available after 12.30pm, as they are preparing the rice. Well known for their affordable Salmon Mentai Bowl ($10), they have other affordable options as well. We tried their Mango Ebi Maki ($10), which had thick slices of mango laid upon a maki with fried ebi inside.

The mango was sweet enough to give the maki a refreshing taste, but it doesn’t overpower or distort the taste of the fried ebi. I especially loved the rice, which is extra sticky and seasoned well. Scoops of tobiko sit on top of the mango slices, and mayo is drizzled over the entire masterpiece. Definitely one of my favourites on this list!

P.S. Do say hi to the friendly sushi chef!

Kinsa Sushi

We tried the popular Salmon Mentai Maki ($16.80), which has crabmeat and cucumber topped with aburi salmon mentai, and ikura.

The coolest part of this maki is not that it has a Healthier Choice symbol, or that it is delivered to you by a robot called Techi, but that it has PURPLE rice!

Purple rice has loads of health benefits. It is a source of iron, which helps the body to metabolise proteins and prevent anaemia.

Though it is a healthier choice, taste is definitely not compromised. I enjoyed the extra bite that the purple rice provided, and they were generous with the crabmeat and cucumber.

Koh Sushi Grill and Bar

This is one of the hottest makis in Singapore. There are 2 ‘generations’ of the Shiok Maki – the original with unagi and avocado and the ‘2nd generation’ with fried ebi and wakame. Everyone gets to order their favourites here. We tried the original ($16.80), which had firm yet tender slices of unagi and avocado nestled together within the rice rolls. The lightly seared salmon pieces were placed on top, along with a generous portion of tobiko for extra crunch.

To complete the whole package, the entire maki is drenched with their special sauce that tastes like a cross between mentaiko and mayo. Doesn’t sound particularly appetising, but the sauce is REALLY shiok. It is creamy and savoury-sweet, the perfect accompaniment to the maki.

By the way, each maki roll is made to order here. We could take apart the warm individual rice grains easily. It’s definitely not the cold, pre-made Japanese sushi rolls. Shiok!

Makisan

The Maki Lemak is a Ramadan Special by Maki-San, a go-to maki for students and working adults alike. A thin egg wrap holds Japanese white rice, boiled egg, shredded cucumber, roasted peanuts, anchovies, tempura otak, and roasted dessicated coconut. The Shiok Sambal, Makisan’s special sauce of the month, brings the ingredients together.

Although it does not exactly remind us of Nasi Lemak, fans of rojak will appreciate the thick and nutty sauce.

The individual ingredients and the Maki Lemak will be available till 31st July 2017.

Tanuki Raw

Perhaps you’d want to give their makis a try the next time you’re at Tanuki Raw! Unlike the other makis which come in 6-8 pieces, Tanuki Raw’s Golden Kani Maki ($18.90) comes in 4 huge pieces. Each piece features deep-fried house-seasoned soft shell crab, fresh snow crab, cucumber and crispy mozzarella. It is then garnished with toasted seaweed and doused with golden salted duck egg hollandaise sauce.

I thought that the portion of crab was great, and the soft shell crab was crispy but not greasy. The rice could use some work though.

Standing Sushi Bar

After hearing my friends rave about this place, I decided to try one of their signature makis, Under The Sea ($18.90). Think torched scallop with mentaiko sauce on crab stick, avocado and cucumber.

The scallop is lightly seared, and the rice coated evenly with tobiko. Mayo was included to prevent the insides from getting too dry, but I felt that it was not needed because the mentaiko sauce was sufficiently creamy..

They have 50% off all signature rolls on Wednesdays, which means getting a cheap fix of maki rolls! The Rockstar Roll ($16.90) which has a fried mozzarella cheese centre with torched salmon and mentaiko sauce is something I would consider returning for.

Our favourite Maki was the Dynamite Maki from Senmi Sushi! Its a good alternative for our friends who prefer meat over seafood. However, if you’re looking for a maki with no frills, Japanese Curry Express would be your best bet with their affordable yet scrumptious makis.

For as long as I can remember, Simpang Bedok has been a food haven for supper-goers staying in the east. I grew up in the east so Simpang Bedok is not unfamiliar territory but instead something close to my heart. Besides the abundance of mouth-watering food, Simpang bedok also offers Karaoke, a small shopping mall (East village) and numerous cafes for you to kickback and chill after work. Included in the list are some of my personal favorites that I usually hit up when I want to unwind or to just hang out with friends.

Sarah’s the pancake cafe

Simpang_Sarah's_Pancakes

Nestled in East Village, Sarah’s The Pancake Café offers affordable and interesting pancake creations. If you’re looking for something to sweeten your day, the Ala Dol ($12) will definitely make your day! It consists of red bean paste-filled crepes dressed with pandan chendol, corn, attap seeds and gula Melaka sauce!

Ambeng Cafe

Simpang_Ambeng_Cafe

Just in the vicinity of Sarah’s is Ambeng Café. As the name suggests, they specialize in Nasi Ambeng. We were especially impressed with their rendang and the sambal chilli. We tried the Classic Trio Set D ($48) which is good for 3 or 4 people. It comes with 10 side dishes – ayam kalio, beef rendang, sambal sotong, ikan sambal bali, urap kencur, terung garem asam, sambal goreng, sambal kachang ikan bilis, begedel, telur belado, paru, ikan kering, serunding and sambal belachan. Spize

Simpang_Spize_Pesto_Chicken_Linguine

Many supper-goers would be familiar with Spize which is well known for their extensive menu of Asian and Mediterranean delights. They are open all the way till 4am to ensure that you’ll have a warm satisfied tummy before you go to bed. Unlike any of the other places featured in this list, Spize offers a delivery service ($5-$16) depending on distance so you can enjoy your supper in your bed. We tried their Chicken Pesto Linguine ($14.50) and was a tad disappointed. The pasta was well cooked and the servings generous but we felt that the dish lacked the aroma and flavor you’d expect from the pesto sauce. Overall, the dish was a little bland and we would have preferred it to be slightly less oily. However, we’ll definitely go back to try the more popular choices which include their Penang Char Kway Teow($6.90) and Sriracha and Honey glazed chicken wings ($9.50)!

Fish Tales

Simpang_Fish_Tales_Tom_Yum_Seafood_Pasta

Tucked behind the bus stop opposite the Simpang post office is a cozy restaurant that serves up some affordable C-food(comfort food) in a comfortable air-conditioned setting. Fish Tales is famous for their Beaurre Au Citron Fish and chips($9.90) and the Cheesy Affair fish and chips($10.90) amongst many other interesting items on their menu. We ordered their Tom Yum Seafood ($12.90) and polished the plate clean! It comes with 2 medium-sized mussels, sotong, prawns and small bits of fish drenched in a rich creamy seafood tom yum sauce. Unlike traditional tom yum soups where the sourness is prevalent, their tom yum sauce leaves only a mild sour aftertaste. The sauce complements the fresh assortment of seafood with a fiery punch. The spice takes a bit of time to set in but when it does, its pretty legit. Fret not, because they offer free flow water to extinguish the flames. Phew! Even though they don’t open for supper, we’ll definitely be back for dinner in the future.

Mahmoodiya restaurant

Simpang_Mahmoodiya

Perpetually crowded through the night, Mahmoodiya restaurant is a popular hangout place for many. They serve hearty Indian dishes like butter chicken, tandoori chicken, biryani and, of course, prata. I’m a regular patron of this restaurant. I go there for my prata fix every week. For just a buck, you get a thick piece of plain prata with 2 different curries. What I like is the crispy crust and the buttery soft center. If you observe carefully, you’ll also realize that the prata is devoid of any burnt parts! Since they’re open 24 hours, you have the luxury to get your prata fix at any time of any day.

If you’re in the mood for Japanese, The Burning Oak is the way to go. We also liked the Wagyu Rump & Iberico Pork Combo Bento ($15) which features tender and juicy slices of meat that really hit the spot. If you’re just looking for a snack to round up your scrumptious dinner, get the Angus Beef Short Ribs Skewers for only $6 per stick.

Tang Tea House Hong Kong Café

Simpang_Tang_Tea_House_Crispy_Bee_Hoon

It is now common for restaurants to open past midnight due to the budding supper scene here in Singapore. Tang Tea House Hong Kong Café is a Halal-certified restaurant that opens till 2am. They offer more than 200 different items on their menu. Crowd favourites include local delights such as Assam Curry fish head and Char Kway teow. We ordered their signature pan fried crispy bee hoon ($11) and were not disappointed. Fresh lime and chili were served on the side of a satisfyingly rounded omelette filled with sotong, prawns, fish cakes and bee hoon. The crust was light, yet crispy, and it complemented the soft moist bee hoon. Remember to add in the lime and chili for that extra oomph. This is a must try!

Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh

Simpang_Soon_Huat_BKT

Manned and run by a team of ex-convicts, Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh offers an amazing rendition of the popular Bak kut teh dish. The dry and soup versions are both top-notch in their respective fields. We liked the dry bak kut teh ($6.90) because of the dried cuttlefish which lent a nice crunch and rich flavour. If you’re less adventurous and prefer the soup version ($5.90 for 1 pax, $11.90 for 2-3 pax, $22.90 for 4-5 pax), you won’t be disappointed too. Albeit comparatively milder, the broth offers a rich full-bodied flavor with a hint of sweetness. We liked that the pork was tender and firm. We all need second chances in life, but this bak kut teh won’t need one.

Badoque Café

Simpang_Badoque_Cafe

Featuring an international menu consisting of Asian, fusion, Mediterranean and even middle eastern cuisines, Badoque is bound to excite your taste buds. Amusingly, Badoque which sounds like Bedok, is in fact a Malay slang for eat. Generous with their portion, this café is well known amongst the Malay community because of the quaint ambience and tasty food. The Badoque ribs ($36), which is their bestseller, comes with a succulent rib lavishly drizzled with a savory brown sauce. We also recommend the Greek salad, seafood pasta, lamb shanks and especially the potato wrapped prawns.

D’zerts Café

Simpang_D'zerts_Cafe

Although it’s not in the immediate vicinity of Simpang Bedok, D’zerts café is just about a 5-minute walk away. Opened in 2013 by an ex-navy chef, Lemuel runs this quaint and secluded café that specializes in handmade desserts. They do serve other mains like pasta, juices and coffee too. Their desserts cater to different palates, not just the sweet-toothed café-goers. I was informed that they change up their dessert selection every couple of months to keep things fresh. We decided to get their lemon tart which is an outfit of lemon mousse, lemon curd, almond cream and a roasted marshmallow! As the name suggests, it was really sour. The lemon curd was mildly sweet but was easily overpowered by the tangy bright yellow sprinkle on it. The light lemon curd complemented the crumbly tart really well and helped to balance out the sourness. Overall, I loved the refreshing dessert and I strongly recommend that you visit them for a sweet or sour fix.

Stretched along the iconic Singapore river is the popular night spot, Clarke Quay. Beyond the night clubs, rooftop bars, and live music lies a great deal of hidden gastronomic delights. If you’re looking to nosh to your heart’s content or are on the lookout for nibbles to pair with your drinks, here are 9 dining joints to visit this June.

VLV Singapore

VLV Singapore is housed in a heritage building along the Singapore riverfront. Within the century-old structure is a contemporary setting with colours of red, orange and gold that are reminiscent of the oriental era. Modern Chinese cuisine awaits and you have to go for their Dim Sum Extravaganza.

Be intrigued by the Fish, Celery & Mushrooms Dumpling ($6.80 for 3pc), which is wrapped with a black dumpling skin naturally coloured with squid ink. The fish filling is soft and fresh with the celery and mushroom adding a crunch. The Lobster Dumpling ($9.80 for 3pc) comes in a beautiful green and orange skin which is made from natural food colouring as well. Encased within the delicate and soft skin is a lobster filling which is slightly sweet and succulent. There is also chopped chestnut in the filling. Locals can opt for the familiar Singapore Chilli Crab Bun ($6.80 for 3pc) which holds shredded crab meat in s sweet and tangy sauce.

Dim sum lovers must not miss the Crispy Seafood Rice Roll ($8.80) – a seafood fritter wrapped in a rice noodle roll in XO sauce. VLV Singapore also puts a modern spin on the classic siew mai with the Crab Roe Kurobuta ‘Siew Mai’ ($5.80 for 4pc), which has a fragrant and light pork filling. Every Sunday, VLV dishes out a 4-hour long champagne dim sum brunch buffet which is perfect for families. Don’t miss it!

Catch Beer & Batter

Catch Beer & Batter is a cosy fish and chip joint that offers a variety of fish and seafood served in an assortment of batters. I particularly enjoyed basking in the cosy ambience. Patrons can also chill out with a beer, or two, in their alfresco dining area.

Get ready to dive into their newly launched Fusion Platter, which is an enormous seafood sharing platter ($38++). The platter is replete with oceanic delights such as crisp fried halibut, succulent king prawns coated in a tantalizing sambal sauce, fresh clams, fried calamari, juicy chicken sausages, cut potatoes, tomatoes and sweet corn on the cob. Catch! is certainly the place to go if you’re looking for awesome food and a great ambience.

Tang Music Box

Forget about your usual karaoke spots. Tang Music Box is definitely your next go-to place to sing along to the latest hits or croon to timeless classics. I was very drawn to the pantry concept at the entrance which sells a myriad of imported snacks, candies, as well as big bags of potato chips. The visual gratification continues when you are led into one of their karaoke rooms which features stunning wall murals depicting the streets of Hong Kong, Taiwan and Tokyo.

Fancy some light bites to go along with your karaoke session? Tang Music Box serves Golden Fish & Chips ($17.90) which features a portion of fried fish coated in a delicious batter, fries, chilli sauce and mayonnaise. For a kid-friendly option, families can opt for the 2 Piece Chicken Sliders with Chips ($17.90) which is equally palatable. Tang Music Box also welcomes you to celebrate your private parties, functions or corporate events with their new party packages. Remember to look out for their daily promotions!

Da Miao Hotpot

Da Miao Hotpot offers an authentic Chengdu hotpot experience which guarantees a treat for all of your senses. Begin with a Damiao Traditional Yuan Yang Soup Pot ($20.00++), which comes in a metal base filled with 2 strongly-flavoured soup bases – Special Spicy Soup and Fresh Mushroom & Pig Bone Yuan Yang Soup Pot. Besides the usual hotpot ingredients, such as Enoki mushrooms, freshly-minced meat paste (from $18++) etc, Da Miao’s menu offers premium ingredients like Australian Prime Beef ($32.00++) and my favourite Fresh Shrimp Paste ($18.00++).

Venture into some of Chengdu’s exotic foods, including the crunchy Swine Trachea ($16.00++), and succulent Boston Butt ($13.00++) – a playful term for pork neck. You have got to dip all their ingredients into their flavourful condiments, especially the sesame oil which is presented in a curious little red can.

Interestingly, their sesame sauce is the only condiment stored in individual can packaging because it is most at risk of unhygienic food handling due to it being the most popular condiment. Whilst relishing in the sumptuous hotpot feast, you can also enjoy traditional Chengdu performances on a glamourous stage.

The Pump Room

The Pump Room, a bistro that incorporates elements of a microbrewery, bistro and bar promises a memorable drinking, dining and partying experience. I was excited to hear about their new menu which will be launched some time in the month of June. Fret not, crowd favourites will be retained in the new menu.

For a heartier option, go for the Australian Tomahawk Beef ($98 for 800 to 900 grams) that comes with thick cut French fries, salad and a choice of Red Wine Sauce, Tasmanian Bush Pepper Sauce or Diane Sauce. The beef is seasoned well with smoked sea salt and freshly crushed pepper. If you like something to go along with their craft beers on tap, I will recommend the Crispy Pork Knuckle ($38.00) that is paired with a bowl of sauerkraut and beer sauce. I was pleasantly surprised by The Pump Room’s selection of dessert. The moist Sticky Date Pudding ($12.00) drenched in caramel sauce is a must try!

Quayside Seafood

Quayside Seafood is a riverfront restaurant serving up a variety of Singapore’s unofficial national seafood dishes. Enjoy the cool river breeze under the stars in their spacious alfresco area.

You have to get the Sri Lankan crabs in the signature Popular Chilli Sauce or Black Pepper Sauce ($7.50++ per 100g). Digging into a mantou dipped in tangy chili crab gravy hit all the right spots for me. Another seafood contender is the highly acclaimed Indonesian Style Prawns in Claypot ($11.50++ per 100g). The light and aromatic broth possesses a hint of sweetness from the fresh and succulent prawns.

Another must-try is the Quayside Seafood’s Signature Fried Calamari with Fragrant Salt & Pepper ($30++ for small, $40++ for regular, $55++ for large). This appetizer has a super crispy batter that’s fried to a golden hue. If the weather gets too warm, grab a serving of refreshing coconut juice ($12++) to beat the heat.

Beer Xchange

With a host of entertainment options such as darts, pool and live band performances, Beer Xchange is exceptionally popular. For a bar, their standard of food is outstanding. I was impressed with their rendition of Truffle Mushroom Cream Pasta ($21++). The pasta was al-dente, with a strong truffle aftertaste that lingers in every bite.

I found myself pretty satiated after the Xchange Burger ($24++), which is a massive assembly of beef and pork patty, caramelized onions, tomatoes, cheese and mushrooms. Enliven your dining experience with the Teriyaki Beef Pizza ($24++), made from Australian Wagyu Beef, or the novel Nan-ru Pork Belly Strips ($15++), which sees pork belly deep fried in fermented bean curd. Complete your meal with the sweet Chocolate Lava ($14++) which is served with biscuit crumbs, a scoop of Movenpick vanilla ice cream, and fresh strawberries.

Shiraz

Shiraz is renowned for delivering a truly authentic Persian experience with added buzz. Shiraz has been offering a heady mix of delectable Persian cuisine since 2007. The Shandiz ($47++) is a Mashhady-style charbroiled lamb chops.

What really stood out, for me, was the Morasah Polo with Chicken ($38++), which sees a tender juicy chicken baked with saffron rice and an assortment of nuts and dried fruits. You will not leave Shiraz hungry because most of the mains come with a generous portion of fluffy basmati rice spiced with saffron.

If you stay past 8pm, you will be treated to an elegant belly dance that is best enjoyed while you sip on their Shiraz Special Cocktail ($17++).

You will be dazzled by red neon signs and a sexy and chic interior decked out in bold colors of red and black as you walk into the bar.

Red Tail Bar by Zouk also boast a pong table, a shots roulette chest and many more drinking games, intended for an all-round package of fun, after work hangout and pre-drink sessions to kick off the party nights. Kickstart the night with a combination of gingerly crafted cocktails inspired by iconic nightlife destinations. Float Like A Butterfly ($17++) is a combination of gin, cinnamon, lemon and artisanal tonic that was conferred an award as Asia’s Best Gin & Tonic at the East Imperial Gin Jubilee 2016. For a stronger flavour profile, opt for the Cold Brew Lover ($18++) which is a concoction of dark rum, orange bitters, honey water and homemade cold brew coffee. 99 Bistro and Kitchen – NEW bamboo biryani in Singapore!

99Bistro&Kitchen_Exterior

Since their launch 20 months ago, 99 Bistro and Kitchen has dedicated themselves to serving authentic and delectable Indian cuisine. Head chef Syed Shah has revolutionised the biryani dish by introducing bamboo biryani on 19 April 2017. After graduating from SHATEC in 2004, head chef Syed Shah amassed a wealth of experience from working in different hotels like Marina Mandarin and Mandarin Oriental. He also further honed his skills during his stint at The Landmark Restaurant. Now, he doubles as a head chef of 99 Bistro and Kitchen and a celebrity chef who teaches young aspiring chefs.

99Bistro&Kitchen_Interior

I ordered the famed Bamboo Biryani set ($24) which comes with a cup of hot honey lemon ginger drink and a cup of iced blueberry soda. The set is good for 2 people and for good reason. The generous 450-gram lamb shank is served atop a mountain of basmati rice, and flanked by 3 different sauces. The bamboo lamb biryani consists of fresh Australian lamb shank, Pakistani Karachi spices, Indian basmati rice and a hard-boiled egg, all cooked together in a south Indian bamboo trunk.

99Bistro&Kitchen_Start_Knock

The dish is served in a bamboo trunk wrapped in banana leaves. This serving method locks the flavor of the spices into the meat and rice. Before knocking the lamb biryani out of the bamboo trunk onto a plate, a staff will offer to explain the preparation of the dish. I appreciated the effort taken by the staff to explain the dish.

99Bistro&Kitchen_Lamb_Shank

Lamb is an acquired taste for many because of the gamey taste that it often possesses. As a beef lover, I must admit that lamb is not one of my favorite go-to meats. The lamb is first braised for 2 hours before it is cooked with basmati rice and spices in the bamboo trunk for 30 minutes. Much to my surprise, the lamb did not taste “gamey” and was luxuriously tender and flavorful. I also liked that the lamb shank was quite fatty and adds some texture to the dish. Owing to head chef’s Syed Shah’s connections as a butcher previously, the lamb shanks are directly import from Australia.

When asked about the difference between regular biryani and the bamboo biryani, head chef Syed Shah jokingly discloses that he chose to use Pakistani Karachi spices because of its milder flavor in comparison to regular Indian spices used at other Biryani stalls. The spice was not overwhelming but instead contributes an aromatic fragrance and rich flavor to the dish. Albeit a little spicy, the spices help to bring the lamb and rice together.

The rice was fragrant and was embedded with roasted cashew nuts and cherry tomatoes. The cashews and cherry tomatoes were, however, scarce and it would have been nice if they had been more generous with them. Nevertheless, the perfectly cooked basmati rice more than made up for it!

If you’re a biryani fan, you might realize that the bamboo biryani is served without any curry. In traditional biryani dishes, the curry helps to marry the masala together with the rice and the meat. The bamboo, however, replaces the need for curry in this dish.

Head chef Syed Shah also recommends completing the meal with a cup of the hot ginger drink which will only be served once you finish your meal. Made from ginger, honey and hot water, the drink is supposed to aid digestion since the biryani is heavy on the stomach. I liked how the honey ginger drink wasn’t spicy and it helped to take some of the heat from the spice away. Personally, I find the drink very soothing and thoroughly loved it.

99Bistro&Kitchen_Knocking

To sum it up, the bamboo biryani was simply shiok and the personalized dining experience was a real game changer for me. I was thoroughly satisfied and will definitely be back. If your loved ones aren’t free to dine with you, I’ll be more than happy to oblige.

Chindamani Indian Restaurant – Sinfully Crispy Prata in Singapore

$

We’ve wanted to try Chindamani Indian Restaurant’s prata ever since we came across rave reviews of their crispy prata. We were told that the queue on weekend mornings could get quite crazy, so we decided to have our breakfast here on a weekday morning. There was still a queue when we arrived around 9am, but it was manageable as the servers were quick and efficient.

chindamani-indian-restaurant-plain-prata

We ordered 4 kosong, 1 egg, 1 plaster, 1 egg and onion prata, and their signature chicken curry. The bill cost around $12. After trying the different variations of prata, we understood why customers queuing in front of us only ordered the kosong prata. It is the best among all.

The prata dough had been kneaded well before it was cooked to a beautiful golden brown. It is thinner than the usual prata you get elsewhere, and very crispy indeed. The only downside is the lack of a buttery aroma. Remember to dip the prata into the curry that is moderately thick and consistent. The tinge of sweetness you get from the curry cuts the level of spiciness, making it very palatable.

chindamani-indian-restaurant-curry-chicken

We recommend their chicken curry which comes with a generous portion of chicken thigh. The meat is well prepared, and fork-tender. It soaks up the curry nicely, and you get to enjoy a mix of spices in every mouthful.

chindamani-indian-restaurant-plaster-prata

My personal favourite is the plaster prata, as it consists of a fried egg with an enticing runny yolk. The plaster prata is a little more doughy and thicker in texture as compared to the crispy kosong prata. It is also not as greasy as the prata you get elsewhere.

We’re pretty sure that this stall has many loyal supporters, especially those who stay around Serangoon North. The prata is decent, but it might not be worth traveling from the far east or west for. Moreover, if you prefer doughy prata, this wouldn’t be your cup of tea.

Just Dough – Healthy Colourful Steamed Baos with Delicious Fillings

A piping hot bao for breakfast, anyone? Just Dough is conveniently located at Suntec City, just beside the Fountain of Wealth. It’s the perfect spot for the working crowd to grab a quick bite before work, as they open at 7.30am in the morning! They make their own fillings, and you can find interesting flavours such as Durian and Pumpkin Salted Egg. The colourful buns are so pretty!

Just Dough Dough_edited

Just Dough Filling_edited

Owner, Vincent Koh, believes in using natural colouring from vegetables to dye the dough. The dough and fillings are made from scratch in-house. The staff then wrap a generous dollop of filling in the vibrantly coloured dough before steaming the buns. The texture of the buns here is slightly denser as compared to the traditional cantonese baos, but the buns are equally fluffy.

Just Dough All 2_edited

Just Dough has a range of flavours that cater to those with a sweet tooth, and those who prefer something more savoury. We tried a few of their most popular flavours.

Just Dough Sweet Potato_edited

Their best-seller is the Purple Sweet Potato ($1.90). Purple sweet potato mash is encased in a light green and black coloured bun, with a walnut on top. The quirky colours come from green tea powder and bamboo charcoal powder! We liked that the sweet potato mash was not overly sweet and tasted natural and light on our palates. This flavour is especially popular among the older generation and those who prefer something more traditional.

Just Dough Banana Chocolate_edited

The Banana Chocolate ($1.90) is favoured as a dessert after meals. Rich chocolate filling is encased in a green and yellow bun. The decadent chocolate is slightly molten after being steamed, and is extremely satisfying when paired with the bun. Our bun only had one slice of banana and the staff told us that it is primarily a chocolate bun. This means that it is perfect for an afternoon snack or an after-meal dessert. It might be a tad too rich to have for breakfast unless you’re a chocoholic!

Just Dough Curry Chicken 2_edited

If you’re looking for a grab-and-go meal, the Curry Potato Chicken ($2.60) is the bun for you. Grouped under their ‘Big Bun’ category, it is larger in size as compared to the Banana Chocolate bun. It is filled with a generous portion of chicken, half a hard boiled egg, and mini potato cubes. The curry is creamy and rich. After being steamed, the fragrance of the curry that wafts out after you take a bite is captivating! Those looking for a healthier meal will be pleased, as there are no fats or skin on the chicken bits inside.

Just Dough Shopfront_edited

Just Dough has a cafe-restaurant style concept. They offer both takeaway options (steam it for 10 minutes before enjoying it) and dine-in options. If you’re having your buns on site, the friendly staff will prepare a freshly steamed bun for you. Do get their Chilli Crab Soup ($7.90) which is only available in store. It comes with a plain mantou, so be careful not to over order!

Just Dough Logo_edited

Just Dough Shopfront 2_edited

They frequently update and change their menu. Currently, their other flavours include Pumpkin Salted Egg, Coconut, Wolfberry, Yam, Durian, and Peanuts. They also have a new menu which includes items like Chicken Burger Set ($6.90) with sweet potato fries.

By the way, this is the complete list of the natural ingredients that Just Dough uses to get the unique colours for their buns.

Yellow: Carrot juice
Black: Bamboo charcoal powder
Green: Green tea powder
Red: Red yeast rice
Dotted black: Black sesame
White: Wholemeal,
Chocolate: Cocoa powder.

During other seasons, they might bring back tomato juice which is slightly pink, and chilli juice which is orange in colour.

This place might be called Just Dough, but it definitely has more than ‘just dough’ to give. Do drop by Just Dough for a healthy and delicious snack or meal.

Swatow Wanton Noodle – The Highlight is Their Delightful Laksa

Swatow_Wanton_Mee_Shopfront

Opened for almost 50 years, Swatow Wanton Noodle is managed by Linda and her 72-year-old mother. Linda is a second-generation hawker who learnt the recipes from her mother. Nowadays, her mother takes the morning shift while she handles the afternoon and evening shifts. They serve a variety of noodle dishes such as wanton noodle, Ipoh hor fun, and laksa.

swatow-wanton-noodle

swatow-wanton-noodle-mee

The signature at Swatow, as its name suggests, is the wanton noodle ($3/$4/$5). Unlike most stalls that drench their noodles with either chilli sauce or ketchup, Swatow’s wanton mee is soaked in a dark sauce. We enjoyed the al dente noodles but felt that the sauce can be improved on. It was a tad too bland for our liking.

swatow-wanton-noodle-dumplings

Surprisingly, the dumplings in the soup that accompanies the wanton mee are plump and tasty. Each dumpling is generously stuffed with minced pork, black fungus, shrimps, and water chestnuts for that extra crunch. Linda explained that her mother arrives at the stall as early as 4am daily just to make the dumplings by hand. Her effort has certainly paid off.

swatow-wanton-noodle-mee-ipoh-hor-fun

swatow-wanton-noodle-ipoh-horfun

The Ipoh Hor Fun ($3/$4/$5) fared better than the wanton noodle. Braised mushrooms, shredded chicken and vegetables sit atop the silky rice noodles. This dish is light, but flavourful. We would prefer a richer gravy for lunch or dinner, but slurping on the smooth hor fun and tender chicken makes an ideal breakfast.

swatow-wanton-noodle-laksa

The unexpected star of Swatow took us by surprise. The Laksa($3.50/$4.50), contains cockles, taupok, beansprouts, and slices of fishcake. The laksa broth is reasonably thick with just the right amount of spiciness. You can request for more chilli, of course, but we enjoyed it the way it was served. Be warned, the broth is very addictive.

Bedok has tons of good food, but we would specially make a return visit just for Swatow’s laksa. You might also want to try their mushroom chicken feet noodle, and Teochew homemade fried ngoh hiang which Linda highly recommends. There were only two of us, so we were too full to stomach more. Do grab a larger group of friends so you can savour more dishes!

Don.档 – Affordable Japanese Fusion Donburis at a Coffee Shop

Opened late last year by three friends, Don 档 is a store in a food court along Foch Road that specialises in Western-Japanese fusion donburi. Their bestsellers include the Wagyu Beef Don and Mentaiko Salmon Don which we tried. While the proteins in our bowls weren’t anything to shout about, we loved that they use japonica rice, which are rounder, thicker and have more bite compared to other variety of rice.

DonDang-Beef

We tried the Wagyu Beef Don ($12.90) which comes with a generous portion of thick wagyu beef slices and a sous vide egg. Although the portion is great, the quality of the meat can be improved on. The beef slices here are first cooked via the sous vide method, before being torched to achieve lightly charred edges. We thought that the beef slices were too tough and rubbery after being overcooked. There was insufficient seasoning as well. However, the saving grace was the japonica rice which was sticky and delicious when mixed with the 72-degrees sous vide egg. On top of that, donburi sauce was drizzled on top of the rice as well, making it more flavourful.

DonDang-Salmon

DonDang-Salmon2

We also tried the Mentaiko Salmon Don ($9.90). I was impressed by the thick layer of blowtorched mentaiko mayo which lay atop my salmon. Overall, it was rich, creamy and satisfying. Instead of grilling the salmon, Don uses the sous vide method which results in a moister and less flaky salmon. At 46 degrees, the salmon is still slightly pink in the centre. The salmon relies on the mentaiko to add flavour to it and was rather bland on its own. Once again, the creamy grains of rice saved the day.

DonDang- Store

DonDang- Menu

Do give their new items like Unagi Don and Salted Egg Yolk Fried Salmon Belly a try! If you’re going in a big group, get their huge Kyodai Don ($28.90) which comes with a whole lot of different proteins like wagyu beef slices, fried chicken, sio bak, tempura prawns and more of their mentaiko salmon. It serves 2-4pax and saves you from the trouble of deciding what to get.

Mr Lorbak – Comforting Lu Rou Fan for a Happy Belly

Mr Lorbak only serves one dish, and they do it exceptionally well. This humble stall at a coffee shop in Ubi is helmed by Mr William Liou, who was previously the general manager of a restaurant group. He has a wealth of experience after having worked in the kitchen of Copthorne King and Swissotel The Stamford. He is also trained in culinary arts and has a diploma from Shatec.

Mr LorBak Man_edited

Mr Liou wakes up at 7am to prepare his signature dish. He believes that the hawker trade is something that should not be allowed to die out, and has thus adapted a family recipe from his Grandmother.

Mr LorBak6_edited

The pork belly is left in a stock with around 20 types of herbs and spices including cinnamon, aromatic galangal, star anise and dried ginger for 3 hours, before being braised for 14 hours to ensure that the meat is seasoned evenly. The pork belly becomes nearly gel like and is extremely tender. The wobbly chunks of meat are then served atop a bowl of rice, before the entire mix is drizzled with more of that dark brown robust stock. As the pork belly is made in small batches, do be prepared to wait if they run out.

Mr LorBak1_edited

Each bowl ($3.50) comes with two halves of a braised egg and black fungus. Diners have the option to add preserved vegetables, tau pok or mushrooms at $0.50 per portion. The rice grains were distinguishable and well cooked and went excellently with the braised gravy. It is not too salty and makes for a comforting and heartwarming meal.

The pork belly was mouthwateringly tender and had a good ratio of meat to fat. The meat was stringy and came apart easily. One unique point of Mr Lor Bak is that they serve black fungus along with the dish. Mr Liou told us that the crunchy black fungus helps to reduce the ‘heaviness’ of the dish due to the contrast in texture that it provides. I would recommend adding on dry pickled chinese vegetables for $0.50. Cooked with orange peel and old garlic, it has a light and tangy taste that is refreshing.

Mr LorBak4_edited

Actually, scrap that. Order ALL of the add-ons. The braised mushrooms ($0.50) are succulent and tender. The tau pok ($0.50) is braised for 10 hours and has a spongy texture. As the tau pok soaks up the braised sauce easily, a single bite of it results in an explosion of gravy in your mouth. Shiok!

Mr LorBak3_edited

Mr LorBak Shop_edited

I would definitely bring my friends back to this stall in Ubi. I really admire Mr Liou for venturing out of his comfort zone and opening a hawker store. By the way, his career change was inspired by his frequent trips to Taiwan and his Nyonya heritage! At the moment, Mr Liou is experimenting with the chicken version of Lu Rou Fan. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to try it out.

5 Best Nyonya Laksa in Malacca

$

Laksa, a bowl of noodles packed with a spicy punch, is commonly found in Singapore, and Malaysia. There are different variations though, and the key difference lies in its soup base, which contains either coconut milk, or fresh and sour assam. Last weekend, my friends and I decided to drive up to Malacca, and our goal was to suss out all the best nyonya laksa there. This type of laksa boasts a strongly-spiced coconut gravy which gives the dish a distinctive richness.

486 Baba Low

It was hard for us to locate 486 Baba Low as this rustic food stall is hidden beside a mosque, under the cover of trees. The menu is simple and straightforward, and written with chalk on black boards. We reached around 9.30am and it was already full house. Their signature Nyonya Laksa (5RM) consists of taupok, boiled egg, and fishballs. Infused with excessive coconut milk, the laksa is fragrant, with a mild level of spiciness. Add their special homemade sambal chilli that is made fresh daily for that extra kick!

Opening Hours: 7.30am to 4pm. Closed on Fridays.

Calanthe Art Cafe

Besides being famous for their offerings of coffee from 13 states of Malaysia, Calanthe Art Café is also frequently patronized for their laksa. Calanthe Laksa (12.80RM) features a delicious broth made from coconut milk, lemongrass, turmeric, dried prawn paste, shallots and other secret ingredients. What we enjoyed most was the crispy fried beancurd skin and mini fried fish balls that were served with the laksa. These ingredients are not commonly found in laksa served elsewhere, and gave the dish some texture.

You can also go for something more unique such as the Claypot E-Mee Laksa (14.80RM). Thin fried noodles are served in laksa gravy, in a claypot. We preferred this version as the flavours were more outstanding and rich – so shiok!

Yung Lai Siang

At 5RM per bowl, the laksa here is served with a mixture of yellow noodles, meehoon, and some kuay teow. The hawker is very generous with the amount of toppings which include fried prawn crackers. This was certainly a first for us, and we were surprised that the crackers added a tasty crunch to the dish. The broth is not as thick and rich as those that we have tried elsewhere, but the flavour is just right. It’s light enough to be enjoyed more regularly.

Opening Hours: 7am to 3.30pm daily.

Jonker 88

Although Jonker 88 is well known for their cendol, we thought that the Nyonya Assam Laksa (7RM) fares better. It tastes slightly similar to the sourish Penang Laksa with Assam broth, and is fiery spicy that we couldn’t finish our meal without breaking out in perspiration. If you prefer a heavier broth with a strong coconut milk fragrance, go for their Baba Laksa (6RM) which tastes similar to those that we have in Singapore. Want to have the best of both worlds? Well, the Baba Laksa Kahwin Nyonya Assam Laksa (7RM) is made for you! This broth is a combination of the soup bases from both the Baba and Nyonya Laksa.

Jeta Groves Nyonya Delights

We were very excited to try the nyonya laksa at Jeta Groves Nyonya Delights, as this stall is highly raved about by the locals. However, when we arrived around 11.30am on a Sunday morning, we were told that the laksa was sold out. We could only indulge in dessert. After one mouthful of their Durian Cendol, we decided that this stall is worth returning to. If their cendol is already so good, we believe that the standard of their laksa will live up to its reputation.

Jeta Groves Nyonya Delights

Address: 115 Jalan Merdeka, Taman Merdeka Raya, 75000 Melaka

Opening Hours: 8am to 4pm, but laksa usually sold out before lunch. Closed on Mondays.

We also drove 45 minutes to Klebang area, and were so eager to try another recommended place for laksa – Nyonya Delight Homestyle Cooked Food. Unfortunately, they were sold out too. We learnt our lesson to go really early next time! If you’ve read about JOM Coffee, another café that serves laksa, do take note that they have removed this dish from their menu. Hope our list will help you in the planning of your trip to Malacca, and save you from making wasted trips, like we did. Enjoy!

ah-er-soup-stall

Opened for almost 6 years, Ah Er Soup specialises in traditional Chinese herbal soups at ABC Brickworks Market and Food Centre. If you haven’t heard, this stall has just received the Michelin Bib Gourmand Rating 2017. You can look forward to slurping down luxurious Buddha Jumps Over The Wall, or more commonly found homemade soups such as Old Cucumber Pork Ribs Soup and ABC Pork Ribs Soup.

The soups here are affordably priced – nothing above $7. When asked if the pricing will increase after receiving the Bib Gourmand Rating, Mdm Qu smiled affectionately and said, “this stall caters to many elderly, so we will still maintain our current pricing to meet their needs”.

Buddha Jumps Over The Wall($6.50) is prolly the cheapest luxurious soup you can find in Singapore. It is known for its rich taste which is very evident in the soup here. Each mouthful is robust and flavourful, and the soup contains high quality ingredients such as abalone and thick chunks of fish maw. There are also mushrooms in the soup. The fish maw isn’t the type which melts in your mouth, but we kind of like the slight chewiness.

The Herbal Ginseng Black Chicken Soup ($5.50) is full-bodied, with a good balance of savoury and herbal flavours. Mdm Qu is very generous with the portion of chicken given for each bowl of soup. The thin chicken skin is silky and smooth, and the meat must have been simmered for a long time as it was very tender. I’m usually not a fan of herbal ginseng soups, but thankfully the taste of ginseng isn’t overwhelming in this bowl of goodness.

ah-er-soup-watercress-pork-ribs-soup

The Watercress Pork Ribs Soup ($3.50) exudes a homey taste. It was the lightest of the 3 soups that we tried, but it was still flavourful. This is such a comforting bowl to have, especially when the weather is cold. It is recommended to pair the soups with their signature pumpkin rice, which tastes a tad similar to yam rice, but armed with a fragrance of dried shrimps.

Zai Shun Curry Fish Head (Michelin Bib Gourmand) – Popular Among West-siders

Started by Uncle Ong, Zai Shun Curry Fish Head used to be located at one of the hawker stalls at Yuhua Food Village. They have been in the business for 37 years, and only shifted to the current coffeeshop(just a block away) 14 years ago. Uncle Ong learnt the recipes and cooking techniques from his brother. When asked how he felt about receiving the Michelin Bib Gourmand Award 2017, he humbly said, “I have to thank my loyal customers for their support all these years, or I wouldn’t have made it to where I am today”.

The order system is quite disorganised, and the place can get chaotic during lunch hour. We went ahead with the Curry Fish Head, priced according to the portion that’s ideal for the number of persons you dine with. We paid $26 for a 3-pax portion.

Wild caught Red Snapper from the South China Sea is used at Zai Shun for the Curry Fish Head. The fish head boasts many different textures, and is much sweeter than the flesh. Uncle Ong isn’t stingy when it comes to the size of the fish head. Nowadays, the fish heads you get elsewhere are shrinking in size, but Zai Shun’s portion will not disappoint.

The fish is so fresh, and there’s no fishy odour at all. The curry at Zai Shun is done Assam style. The light gravy is addictive, and it has an alluring tanginess.

zai-shun-fish-head-curry-pig-trotters

The Braised Pig’s Trotter ($8) is another highlight for our lunch. The pork trotters are stewed for hours in a pot with Zai Shun’s secret ingredients. They are soft, tender, and actually quite sweet. We would have loved for the taste of vinegar to be stronger though. A delicious dish like this is best paired with a bowl of piping hot white rice.

zai-shun-fish-head-curry-prawn-paste-chicken

We also ordered a plate of Prawn Paste Chicken ($8) to share. Each golden-brown winglet is armed with a good crisp. The flesh within is quite tender, but we thought that the winglet could have been tastier. It would also have been better if the flavour of the prawn paste is more prominent.

Do note that they are closed from 27 June to 6 July 2017 for renovation.

10 Halal Cafes to Satisfy your Iftar cravings at this Ramadan

The recent advent of Halal cafes has just made breaking fast with your family and friends more exciting. The infusion of traditional Malay flavours into different international Halal cuisines has given birth to an interesting array of food items. We went on a search and found 10 Halal cafes that are worth every bite after you break fast this Ramadan.

Muugu Fork

Opened in 2010, Muugu Fork serves a variety of western dishes that range from pastas to pizzas. Their latest creation involves Raclette Cheese. There are 3 Raclette Combos available. We had the Rac & Surf ($19.90), which consists of 2 pieces of golden breaded fish, and chips served with their warm, melted Raclette cheese. The cheese is not overly creamy, with just the right amount of cheesiness which complements the tender fish meat. Imagine the warm cheesiness, paired with a glass of refreshing, ice-cold Coca-Cola, as you relish every bite.

Badoque Café

“Badoque” is a Malay slang for “eat”, and this café boasts a cozy vibe and good food. Featuring an internationally-inspired menu that marries Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Asian flavours, Badoque café will have you mesmerized with their Greek salad, seafood pasta, lamb shank, and more. Badoque Ribs ($36) is the bestselling item here.

We were almost drooling when a 5cm-thick rib drenched in an enticing brown sauce arrived at our table. The sauce has a nice silky consistency, and the meat is grilled well. It is recommended to share your food with your loved ones as the portions here are very generous.

Eat Play Love

This Thai-Western café offers a unique experience for the whole family. While kids get crafty and doodle the afternoon away at the Craft Corner, parents are able to enjoy their meal in peace. We decided on the Seafood Tomyum Soup with Rice ($9.50) which contains prawns, fish, and mushrooms. You can opt for a red or clear soup base.

We tried the latter, and were surprised by the well-balanced spicy and sour notes in the broth. It packed a good punch, and caused a few droplets of perspiration to trickle down our foreheads. Thankfully, we had a glass of refreshing Coca-Cola Zero Sugar to cool us down and to further enhance the mix of flavours.

Hyde & Co.

Hyde & Co. has developed a dual-personality concept. The menu features a creative selection of pastas and pizzas specially created by Chef Nazlie who comes from a family who runs a Malay food-catering business. Chef Nazlie is trained in Italian cuisine and brings together Italian and Malay flavours here at Hyde & Co. Our top favourite is the Gnocchi “Mee Rebus” ($21.90) which is served with sambal sotong, homemade mee rebus sauce (traditional Malay fermented bean sauce) and a glorious poached egg. Be warned, as the sauce gives a good, fiery kick!

The café also serves interesting curations such as Chilli Crab Pasta ($22.90), Satay Capellini ($19.90) and Firecracker ($22.90) – spicy laksa cream linguine tossed with toasted hei bi hiam (dried shrimp floss), and served with a succulent honey-glazed tiger prawn. You can expect a variety of pizza flavours that will fascinate your tastebuds as well.

Afterwit

Afterwit was inspired by an afterthought of pairing Mexican-influenced fare with an indie café experience. The interior is decorated with a vibrant Mexican flair(think bold colours and rustic furnishings). From quesadillas to tortilla pizzas, to tacos, to burritos, there is definitely something for everyone.

Compadre Lunch ($15) allows you to choose any premium taco or burrito(originally priced at $18 or $19), to be paired with your choice of canned drink. The Beef Briyani Burrito has pulled beef, briyani rice, curry, guacamole, mozzarella, fresh salsa, and whole black beans enveloped within the wrap. Each mouthful gives a burst of flavours and textures. We feel that this hearty dish is best paired with a can of ice-cold Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, as the fizziness of the bubbly drink gives our palates a good cleanse after the carb-heavy meal.

Tash Tish Tosh

Named after the owner’s daughter childhood name, Tash Tish Tosh started as a sandwich café in Onan Road. They have since moved to Kandahar Street, and expanded their menu with more delicious offerings. Enjoy Under The Sea ($14.90 small / $19.90 big) – a thin crust pizza brimming with prawns and squid, gooey mozzarella and excellent homemade white sauce. The other noteworthy item is their Toolang ($9.90) which is well-steeped in its marrow-rich flavours.

Krave

This 2-year-old café specializes in al dente pasta. You can choose between spaghetti and penne for your pasta. We spotted some unique pasta flavours such as Rendang Bolognese ($16), Kurry Kremoso ($16), and Sambal Marinara ($18). The Kurry Kremoso is the café’s own rendition of curry chicken served with pasta.

This dish amazed us, as the rempah is very lemak with lots of coconut milk in it. Having this flavourful dish with a can of thirst-quenching Coca-Cola Zero Sugar is exceptionally satisfying. The fizzy drink helps to bring down the heat, from both the dish, and the weather – very shiok indeed!

Hararu Izakaya

Touted as the first Muslim-owned Izakaya in Singapore, Hararu Izakaya spans 2 storeys, with the second floor decorated in traditional Japanese Tatami dining style. The lunch menu offers diners a variety of 4 different donburi sets. At night, Hararu changes into a Japanese bar and their dinner menu showcases Japanese skewers and other ala carte items.

We popped by during lunch and tried Hararu’s donburi sets. The Unagi Don ($13) features grilled eel with Teriyaki sauce, tamago, pickles and rice. The eel is glistening, with a nice caramelised exterior that gives a slight crisp. It is grilled just right and the meat is tender and boasts a rich, sweet flavour. The Salmon Teriyaki Don ($12), on the other hand, features silky salmon skin with slightly charred edges.

Noosh Halal Noodle Bar & Grill

This Halal eatery noosh-es out incredible fusion food that will change what you think Halal food encompasses. Curly Fries with Bacon and Cheese ($12.90) is rich, flavourful, and great for sharing. Noosh Fried Rice ($12.90) is made complete with chicken floss, sambal belachan, prawn crackers, and a sunny-side up. It isn’t the best of the lot, but still a commendable effort regardless. Smoked Duck Lemak Chilli Padi Pasta ($16.90) is a twist on the conventional nasi lemak. Warning: this is super spicy! But, you may request for a “less-spicy” or “non-spicy” version as well. The flavours are intense, with a prounounced presence of coconut.

Fat Papas

Whenever our burger cravings kick in, we would think of Fat Papas which specializes in homemade burgers. The Wimpy Burger ($15) allows you to choose between a beef or lamb patty. We selected the former, so our burger came with house-blend beef patties, fried egg, turkey bacon, melted aged cheddar, and BBQ sauce, all stacked up between 2 fluffy sesame seed buns.

Dining here is a messy affair, but trust us – the best way of devouring a burger is to not be afraid of getting your hands dirty. Each bite gives a burst of flavours and textures in your mouth and whets your appetite for more. What to make it even more gratifying? Complement that mix of sensations with a cool, icy burst of fizzy goodness from a Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, that will definitely send your taste buds to taste heaven with each gulp.
