Shaker Lakers – Superb Burgers And Fusion Dishes From An Ex-Marche Chef!

$

Tucked away in Yishun Park Hawker Centre is a western food stall that you definitely would not want to miss! Shaker Lakers, opened by Irishman Michael Quinn and Singaporean Gillian Pua, serves up fantastic handmade burgers and pasta with a Peranakan twist.

Mr Quinn and Ms Pua met while working at Marche, where they discovered a shared passion for food and a dream of starting a western food stall of their own. The pair settled on setting up a hawker stall, as the costs of opening a cafe or restaurant proved to be too pricey.

Shaker Lakers makes every item on their menu from scratch, and nowhere is this commitment to freshness more prominent than in the Lakers Signature Beef Burger ($7.50). The beef patties are made to order, with Chef Michael forming the patty by hand before searing them on the flat top stove. This seals in the patties’ natural juices, while also creating a crunchy outer crust. I took one bite and that was definitely one very juicy bite! With the toppings, things are kept simple with lettuce, tomatoes, melted cheese and onion sauce. Think of them as a great supporting cast, letting that glorious beef patty take centre stage!

ShakerLakers_Frying_Landscape

The burger also comes with a side of hand-cut potato wedges, which had a nice golden crust while remaining fluffy on the inside. While the burger was slightly small, the big flavours of this dish made it a very satisfying meal, and something I would go out of my way just to have again!

ShakerLakers_Samballinguine_Portrait
ShakerLakers_Makingthepasta_Landscape

The Sambal Prawn Linguine ($8) is the perfect example of how Shaker Lakers have combined flavours from the east and west. The linguine was cooked perfectly al dente, with a satisfying bite. The pasta comes with three deshelled prawns, which are not only convenient for eating but also infuses the fresh prawn meat with the flavours of the sambal. The sambal itself gave the dish a nice spicy touch without being too hot to handle. Make sure to drizzle your pasta with some calamansi lime juice to cut through the richness of the sambal sauce! My only criticism of this dish was that it was slightly oily.

ShakerLakers_Storefront_Landscape

Shaker Lakers combines top-notch cooking with fresh ingredients that are prepared in-house, something that you do not usually find in many other western food stalls in Singapore. With its superb classic western fare and innovative fusion creations, you will be coming back whenever you need to satisfy your Western food cravings. What’s more, Shaker Lakers has a blackboard that they update with their special menu items for the day, so head on down to try the newest this stall has to offer!

The Curry Wok – Old School Peranakan Food In Bukit Timah!

Peranakan food never fails to put a smile on my face. Even though I am not of Peranakan descent, the comforting flavours never fail to remind me of the simple yet delicious food that my mother or grandmother would cook on weekends. When I stepped into The Curry Wok, its quaint atmosphere and friendly service immediately put me at ease. Located at the Coronation Arcade in Bukit Timah, this restaurant is far away from the hustle and bustle of the city center as well.

As we sat down and had our order taken, I noticed old photos lining the restaurant walls. These photos document the rich history of this family-run business. Teochew Nyonya recipes are passed down from generation to generation, and are constantly refined as they are handed down.

TheCurryWok_Ngohhiang_Landscape
TheCurryWok_Ngohhiangdrip_Portrait
TheCurryWok_Rendang_Portrait

The one dish I was most excited to try was the Ngoh Hiang ($11). A mixture of fresh minced pork and prawns provide great flavour and a firm, springy texture. This is combined with vegetables such as water chestnuts, which add a surprising bite of crunchiness. The beancurd skin crisps up beautifully when deep fried, becoming airy and flaky.

TheCurryWok_Limebelachan_Landscape

The sambal belachan with lime juice and sweet sauce which came with the Ngoh Hiang complemented the dish well. The sambal was fragrant and appetising, while not being overwhelmingly spicy. One serving of Ngoh Hiang comes with two large rolls, which is approximately ten pieces. This dish is perfect for sharing with loved ones, with everyone sharing in the goodness. Just make sure to diplomatically divide the Ngoh Hiang pieces before tucking in, or someone may get carried away and finish more than their fair share!

TheCurryWok_Rendang_Portraitcrop
TheCurryWok_Lodehonrice_Portrait

Next up was the Beef Rendang ($13). I am often hesitant to order Beef Rendang when I eat out, as the beef tends to be tough and stringy. I was thus extremely pleased when I took my first bite of this Beef Rendang, which was not dry at all. The beef almost melts in your mouth because of how tender it was. The beef also had the occasional piece of beef fat, which was silky smooth and made this dish even more decadent. The spice blend was extremely aromatic and fragrant, and also coated the meat well. This dish is a must have with rice, as you will definitely want to finish every single drop of the curry sauce!

I was also pleased with the Sayur Lodeh ($10), which contained ample amounts of fresh vegetables such as long beans, cabbage, carrots and turnips. These vegetables were combined with spices and coconut milk to make a rich and satisfying vegetable curry that will get even the staunchest anti-vegetable person to enjoy eating their greens. This dish, combined with the beef rendang, will make everyone you dine with, strongly consider ordering a second serving of rice!

TheCurryWok_Shopfront_Landscape

The simple, traditional dishes at The Curry Wok is something I will be back for, especially when I am yearning for some comfort food. Make sure to come here with friends, so that you can try as many dishes as possible! Just note that The Curry Wok has limited seating options, with the largest table accommodating only six people.

SolePomodoro Trattoria Pizzeria

Sipping a glass of wine while enjoying great pasta on the waterfront, what could be better? At SolePomodoro Trattoria Pizzeria, their pasta dough is freshly made daily which gives their Tagliolini all’aragosta, long pasta with Canadian lobster and cherry tomatoes, ($39) a satisfying al dente bite. Their Pizzas ($26.50) are made fresh and are cooked in minutes, thanks to a scorching hot wood-fired oven handcrafted in Italy.

The high heat seals in the fresh flavours of the ingredients while imparting a delicate, smoky aroma and flavour. If you have not tried pizzas cooked this way, you are definitely missing out!

Gin Khao Bistro

DSCF2573-7
Ever heard of Watermelon Fried Rice? Well me neither, until I got to Gin Khao Bistro. This modern Thai eatery is known for being the first to bring this Thai street food to Singapore, along with many other yummy Thai dishes.

While the combination of fruit and fried rice ($25.80 for 2 pax) initially sounded strange, we were pleasantly surprised by how the sweetness of the watermelon paired complemented the savouriness of the other ingredients and the wok hei of the fried rice itself. Served in a watermelon bowl, this dish is definitely one for sharing!

DSCF2577-8
DSCF2580-9

No Thai restaurant is complete without delicious tom yum dishes, and Gin Khao Bistro doubles down on this. The Sweet Tom Yum Garlic Chicken ($12.80) had a perfect balance of sweetness, sourness and spiciness. The sweetness of the tom yum glaze lent a nice contrast to the garlicky tender chicken.

Back by popular demand, the Tom Yum Spam Fries ($10.80) is extremely addictive. Be careful when sharing it with friends, as you may end up fighting for the last piece!

Two Chefs Bar

DSCF2604-13
This bar brings together both Mexican and Italian cuisines, offering you the best of both cultures. My favourite dish was the Mixed Fajitas ($30), where marinated beef and chicken slices are served together with mixed bell peppers and onions on a sizzling hot plate which keeps the meal warm throughout. Let your creative juices flow and assemble your own tortilla, with toppings such as guacamole, shredded cheese, sour cream and salsa. Customize it to suit your taste buds!

DSCF2608-14

The Chorizo and Salami Pizza ($26) is topped with salami, mexican chorizo, fresh red chillies and baby spinach. It had a beautifully thin and crispy crust which still supported the ample amount of meat, sauce and cheese on it. Those who cannot take spice should be wary of the fresh red chillies on the pizza, which can catch unsuspecting victims off guard with its spiciness!

DSCF2599-12

The Prawn and Chicken Avocado Salad ($22) features fresh tiger prawns, grilled chicken strips, feta cheese, olives and fresh avocado on a bed of arugula, all tossed together in a refreshingly zesty citrus dressing. This is the perfect lunch item for all who want a substantial, but clean, meal.

Mykonos On The Bay

Take a seat at Mykonos On The Bay and its white and blue hues will transport you to the serene Greek island of Mykonos! The restaurant has a casual, laid-back ambience, inviting you to rest and relax as you enjoy classic Greek delights.

DSCF2628-18

First up was the Mousaka ($27), a casserole consisting of multiple layers of beef and eggplant which are cooked separately before being put together. This cooking method ensures that both elements of the dish are not overcooked. To tie it all together, the Mousaka is topped with a creamy, buttery bechamel sauce. I expected the dish to be on the heavier side, but was pleasantly surprised by how light and tasty it was!

DSCF2622-17

Next was the Stifado ($35). Expect braised lamb shank served on a bed of potato puree and caramelized onions, topped with crispy fried shallots. The lamb was so tender that a fork is the only utensil you really need to tear the meat apart! Better still, the lamb juices soaked into the potato puree, making sure that none of it goes to waste as you devour this dish.

DSCF2640-19

Finish off the meal with the Pagoto Giaourti ($14.90). House-made Greek yogurt ice cream is served with a sponge cake and topped with honey, fresh berries and walnuts.
The yogurt ice cream offers a tanginess which balances out the sweetness of the dessert, with the berries and walnuts adding a satisfying crunch as well.

Also, remember to mention “Christmas at Quayside Isle” when ordering for 10% off* your food bill from now till 31 Dec 2019!

Miska Café

At Miska Café, expect a wide array of Mediterranean and Western dishes which will leave you scratching your head trying to decide what to order. We tried out their new selection of rice bowls, starting with the Miska Super Rice Bowl ($23).

DSCF2654-21

The bowl consists of grilled prime ribeye steak, sweet corn, broccoli, avocado, baby spinach and a grilled lime on top of your choice of fragrant coconut or rich butter rice. The chargrilled lime was something new for me and I thoroughly enjoyed how grilling the citrus fruit deepened flavours and heightened the sweetness of it, adding a light, zesty finish to the entire rice bowl.

DSCF2658-22

Who doesn’t love crispy salmon skin? I know I do. The Salmon Rice Bowl ($23) came with what could be considered a salmon steak that was perfectly seared — the skin was crisp and the salmon was not overcooked. Paired with the other ingredients in the bowl, this dish did not disappoint at all.

DSCF2672-26

The Mexican Chicken Rice Bowl ($21) comes with a chicken marinated in a warm, slightly spicy red sauce, which paired exceptionally well with the cool, refreshing mango and tomato salsa. The black beans and beetroot hummus also helped make the rice bowl much heartier and satisfying.

Rock Bar – Burger & Steakhouse

If you’re a sports fan, Rock Bar is the destination for you. The sports bar serves up delectable Western cuisine and a wide selection of drinks (both alcoholic and for the designated driver). What better way is there to enjoy the weekend football game?

DSCF2686-30

We ordered the Prime Ribeye Steak ($34), which is 200 days grain-fed and served with herb butter. The beef was grilled superbly, tender and juicy in the middle with a nice crust. Dip the steak into the herb butter for even more flavour!

DSCF2692-31
DSCF2676-27

Even the most serious of burger cravings will be satisfied by the Black Truffle Wagyu Burger ($26) The patty is made from 100% wagyu beef, making it ooze with delicious beef fat. Paired with fresh lettuce, tomatoes and truffle mayonnaise, this burger is definitely one not to miss.

If you are in the mood for something lighter, then the Mixed Veggie and Bocconcini Salad ($16) is great for you. Bocconcini are small balls of fresh mozzarella cheese mix pops!

Greenwood Fish Market

Greenwood Fish Market operates both as a wholesale seafood market and a restaurant, which enables the restaurant to directly import their produce and ensure that only the freshest of seafood is served at their establishment. We were treated to a trio of lobster dishes featuring freshly procured Boston lobster.

DSCF2748-40

The Lobster Burger ($69.95) consists of a whole deshelled lobster, portobello mushroom, melted gruyere cheese and brioche buns that are made fresh every service. The sweetness of the lobster is contrasted by the mild sharpness of the gruyere, while the soft, fluffy brioche buns carried a slight sweetness that I enjoyed very much.

DSCF2738-39

The Lobster & Crab Meat Risotto ($49.95) was silky smooth, with large chunks of seafood. Each bite was as good as the last. Despite being pretty full already, I simply could not resist having several spoonfuls of the creamy arborio rice and fresh lobster meat!

DSCF2731-37

If pasta is more your style, try the Saffron Lobster Pappardelle ($49.95). The broad, flat noodles catch loads of the saffron cream sauce, which is infused with delicious lobster flavour. The inclusion of fresh rocket and scallions add a sharp, aromatic element to the dish which cuts the richness perfectly.

Sabio by the Sea, Tapas Bar and Grill

Sabio by the Sea is famous for its Josper grill oven, which uses hot charcoal for fuel. This unique cooking method imparts a smoky flavour to the grilled meat and seafood dishes.

DSCF2789-45

This was especially prominent in their KETOMan Platter ($48), which consists of five artisanal sausages that range from a spicy chorizo to a milder smoked pork and garlic sausage. Pair each sausage with either Dijon Mustard or Garlic Aioli for heaps more flavour!

DSCF2806-48

The Paella Pescado ($29/49) is packed with fresh seafood, such as calamari, mussels, sea bass and shrimp. Despite the different cooking time of each protein, each ingredient was perfectly cooked. My favourite part of this dish was actually the rice, which absorbed all the flavour of the seafood and spices.

DSCF2812-49

Complete the delightful meal with Sabio’s Sangria, which is available in both red and white wine versions ($12 per glass / $49 per jug). This chilled cocktail is a great way to beat the afternoon heat!

The newly revamped Republic Plaza in the heart of Raffles Place has an exciting retail enclave across three levels, housing close to 40 F&B and retail outlets offering a variety of local and international cuisines. You can dine in style here, or simply take away a quick meal! From indulgent to healthy offerings, there is something for everyone!

Here are some options available that you may also want to consider having not only for lunch, but dinner as well!

Aussie Roll

aussie roll storefront

Seeing the display cases of sushi brought me back to the time when I was in Australia for a holiday. Office workers would stop by the roll shops to grab a quick bite of the pre-rolled sushi that came in a variety of flavours. As they come in long rolls, there is little to no fuss when eating them, which makes for the perfect meal if you’re in a hurry.

aussie rolls

Like the shops over in Australia, Aussie Roll has a plethora of flavours too. The best-sellers are (from top to bottom), Teriyaki Chicken ($3.30), King Prawn ($3.10), Salmon Avocado ($3.30), and Crispy Salmon ($3.10, not shown).

aussie rolls portrait

My personal favourite was the salmon avocado. It is a simple combination that has proven time and again that it works. Just dip it in a little soy sauce!

Aussie Roll has a daily ‘Happy Hour’ promotion — if you get your sushi after 6pm, you can get a free roll for every three rolls you purchase. Sounds like a delicious and filling meal if you ask me. They also have a monthly lucky draw where 10 customers stand a chance to win a $10 voucher. All you have to do is drop your name card into their lucky draw box!

BIGDADDY is a brand-new customisable protein bowl concept that made its debut at Republic Plaza. A standard bowl is made up of 1 Protein, 3 Sides, and 1 Sauce. You can mix and match to find your perfect combination! The three proteins available are Grilled Chicken ($9.90), Grilled Norwegian Salmon (150g, $11.90), and Grilled Wagyu Beef (120g, $13.90), all cooked to order. They have keto-friendly options as well!

We tried all three proteins and our favourite has to be the Grilled Norwegian Salmon which was perfectly cooked, tender, flaky, and juicy. It even had a crispy skin which added a crunch to the bowl. Dip it in the accompanying teriyaki sauce for a burst of flavour. For the sides, the caramelised carrots, sauteéd king oyster mushroom, and potato salad won my heart.

Boost Juice

Boost Juice is known for their healthy, yet tasty, smoothies and juices in their iconic green cups. Here are three flavours we think you should try.

pure eden

Pure Eden ($8.50) is a refreshing blend of fresh fruits and vegetables. Think kale, banana, pineapple, apple, lemon, cucumber, mint, coconut water and ice. There’s even an added wheatgrass booster and immunity booster. I was skeptical about this at first as I wasn’t a fan of kale. However, I couldn’t taste the bitterness at all with all the other ingredients coming into play. It is the perfect beverage for a hot day.

5 a day juice portrait

Next up is 5 A Day Juice ($6.50) that’s made with freshly squeezed orange, freshly juiced apple, carrot, celery, beetroot, and ice, plus a vita booster. The celery taste really came through, so if you love celery, you will love this.

soraya's favourite

Last but not least, Soraya’s Favourite ($6.50), and also my favourite. Consisting of mango, green tea, mango nectar, TD4 vanilla yoghurt, sorbet, ice, and an immunity booster, it tasted like a boosted (pun intended) mango milkshake that you might get at some fruit stalls. I must say, Soraya (the owner of Boost) really knows her smoothies.

Café Amazon

Café Amazon is a chain of Thai coffeehouses, with over 3,000 outlets worldwide, dedicated to bringing the taste of nature to you. In a bid to be more environmentally friendly, they have started using recyclable utensils and napkins, as well as plant-based biodegradable straws.

beef lasagne

Not only does Café Amazon take care of the planet, they take care of our stomachs as well. For every main and drink that you get, you’ll be given a free side of fried vegetable chips! We got both the Beef Lasagna ($8.90) and the Chicken Lasagna ($8.90), as well as a hot cup of Thai Milk Tea ($4), and an iced Thai Milk Tea ($4.50).

The Beef Lasagna was packed with the lovely flavours of beef, sweet and tangy tomato sauce and melted cheese! It’s hard not to love this combination!

chicken lasagne

I simply adored the Chicken Lasagna. The minced chicken and the sweet marinara just made for the perfect filling. This rendition was more moist than the Beef Lasagna, and we felt that it was cheesier as well. I could not stop reaching for the Chicken Lasagna, even though I knew I was going to make myself full real quick. However, some things are just worth the sacrifice, and this was one of them.

thai milk tea hot

The hot Thai Milk Tea came with a pretty foam decoration, which made me feel like I was drinking a latte instead. The tea had hints of smokiness throughout, and wasn’t too sweet. I would come back again just for the Chicken Lasagne and this hot cuppa.

From now to 31 December, spend a minimum of $30 in a single receipt, and enter a lucky draw for a pair of Thai Airways return tickets to Bangkok!

bbq pulled chicken and apple coleslaw cross section

They also offer paninis for takeaway during dinnertime. The paninis come in three different flavours — BBQ Pulled Chicken & Apple Coleslaw; Chicken, Camembert, & Apricot Chutney; and Roasted Vegetables ($8.90 each). Our favourite was the BBQ Pulled Chicken & Apple Coleslaw!

dtf xiao long bao

I’m sure their famous Steamed Pork Xiao Long Bao needs no introduction. These little packages of soup and minced pork are wrapped in a delicate skin with at least 18 exquisite folds. It is best eaten when dipped with vinegar and ginger. The Xiao Long Bao is sold in five pieces ($7.30), exclusively at Republic Plaza.

XO fried rice with fried pork chop 2

Din Tai Fung was also given the Singapore’s Best Fried Rice (Restaurant Category) Award in a nation-wide search for the best fried rice. We absolutely loved the Fried Rice with Pork Chop ($13.80). The fried rice deserves its title indeed! The fragrant, flavourful and eggy rice, together with the crispy and tender pork chop had me hooked right from the first bite. Yum!

har cheong gai

To top the meal off, we got the Crispy Chicken Wings Marinated in Shrimp Paste ($6.50). Super crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside, and incredibly flavourful all around. You definitely don’t want to miss out on these fragrant chicken wings!

SaladStop!

SaladStop!’s mission is to “bring freshness back to the table”. They let customers choose from over 60 toppings and a selection of 20 homemade dressings to customise their own salad, wrap, or grain bowl. That being said, they also have some signature and seasonal salads available if you don’t feel like making tough choices for the day.

hail ceasar wrap

The Caesar Wrap ($11.20) is exactly what it sounds like — a Caesar salad in wrap form. It is definitely a crowd-pleaser and something to order if you’re unsure of what to try.

tuna san

The Tuna San Salad ($13.80) consists of romaine lettuce, seared tuna, avocado, edamame, cherry tomatoes, mandarin oranges, sesame seeds, and wasabi honey soy. The fresh tuna, the almost candy-like oranges, and the bright tasting tomatoes made this an especially refreshing salad.

el chulo salad

The El Chulo (seasonal) salad is very unique. The spiced black beans, impossible stew, and the jalapeno lime vinaigrette were just bursting with Mexican flavours. My colleague, who loves Mexican food, gave this a thumbs up. If you’re feeling adventurous, do give this a shot!

From now to 31 December 2019, you can add on any yoghurt for just $3.50!

What’s Pide

what's pide logo

What is pide (pronounced “pea-day”) indeed? It is a Turkish flatbread that can be eaten plain or stuffed. What’s Pide is the creator of the South Korean’s first pocket pide. Each pide is kneaded and baked fresh daily. We tried Mrs. Park (seasoned bulgolgi beef, pickled jalapenos, and caramelised onions – $8 ala-carte, $12 set meal), Prawn Star (crispy soft-shell prawns drizzled with kimchi mayo – $8.50 ala-carte, $12.50 set meal), and Sofia’s Meatballs (homemade Australian beef meatballs infused with herbed tomato sauce – $7 ala-carte, $11 set meal).

mrs park actual

My pick was Mrs Park. I really liked the sweetened thinly-sliced beef, which was complemented exceptionally well by the sour pickles. Each set comes with seasoned fries and a drink. They have this particular drink called Aka Cola, which is a bubbly nutmeg cola that isn’t as sweet as a normal cola, but has a lot more depth in flavour.

For this festive period, you can enjoy their CHRISTMASteeny at $6 for a box of 6 pieces! The mini pocket pides come in two flavours, spiced pumpkin cream and festive berry mix!

Two Cranes – Pulut Hitam Bingsu And Beouf Benedict In Korean Fusion Cafe!

two cranes storefront

Two Cranes is a Korean-fusion cafe in Kovan, whose name stems from the auspicious figure of the crane in Korean culture. It is one of the few cafes around the area, so coffee lovers living nearby now have a place to get their daily caffeine fix.

two cranes bar
two cranes interior
paintings collage

The cafe is decorated simply, with paintings of their mascots, Wonda and Fu. Two Cranes worked with a local artist to design the logo, as well as the cute paintings in the cafe.

two cranes cutting bread 2

The menu offers the usual suspects that can be found in a cafe, but with a Korean twist. The 2 Cranes Boeuf Benedict ($15) features two poached eggs with a smattering of sesame seeds, seated atop a bed of Korean stewed beef, on a slice of buttered toast. I was a little disappointed that there was no sauce to tie all the components together the way the usual hollandaise did.

two cranes egg flow

The best way to eat this is to poke the egg a little to let the yolk flow onto the sandwich. Then, cut into the toast and dig in. The stewed beef was tender, making through easy. The taste was on the sweeter side, similar to bulgogi. The egg yolk added a richness which brought the different elements of the dish together. While I am not sure if this would be able to replace eggs benedict in my heart, it was certainly an interesting take on it.

two cranes earl grey chocolate
two cranes dissolving coton candy

Two Cranes also serves up various fascinating drinks that have a whimsical touch to them. The Earl Grey Chocolate ($6.50), is presented with a stick of three cotton candy balls. Depending on how much sugar you want in your drink, simply submerge as much of the cotton candy as you desire. As someone with a sweet tooth, I dunked all three in without hesitation. The velvety smooth chocolate beverage with its bitter notes from the dark chocolate and the floral scent of the earl grey- this was the perfect mix of chocolate and tea. I definitely not mind going back for it again.

two cranes mocktail
two cranes mocktail collage

Another drink we tried was the Fruits & Thyme Ade ($6). This sparkling glass of ade was so pretty that I could not bear to stir it. I expected the drink to be really sour but it was a far cry from that. The sweet berry tea was really enjoyable to me. The thyme when mixed in, gave a subtle herby flavour. I wished the slice of lime was thicker so that the drink could have a more complex flavour with extra zest.

two cranes pulot hitam
two cranes pulot hitam pour
two cranes spoon of pulot hitam

Finally, it was time for dessert. The Pulut Hitam Bingsu ($12) caught my eye as it is not every day you see this fusion of a local dessert with a popular korean dessert. I’m more used to Pulut Hitam being served hot, so I was excited to see if the cold version could be just as tasty. Surprisingly, this icy dessert was not sweet at all. The Pulut Hitam as well, was a little bland. Thicker than usual in consistency, the only sweetness in the whole bowl came from the crushed Oreos, a rather odd ingredient to add to Pulut Hitam, but I relished every crumb. Hey, I did say I had a sweet tooth. Perhaps sticking to the usual Oreo Bingo would be better.

two cranes tea

Two Cranes lets you smell your tea before you make a decision on which tea to drink. Their tea and coffee are all sourced from local companies. If you really enjoy the drinks, you can also choose purchase the tea leaves and coffee beans at the cafe!

Paradise Dynasty’s newest outlet at Funan has launched their limited-edition alcohol-infused xiao long bao – Tipsy Surprise Xiao Long Bao. From beer and Chinese rice wine to whiskey and cognac, each dim sum basket holds five pieces of these tipsy surprise treats with a different distilled spirit in each soup dumpling.

DSCF4283-4

DSCF4341-12

We started from the TsingTao beer dumpling because it is the lightest. This is followed by the perfect Red Wine and Cheese pairing in a juicy mouthful and Shaoxing Rice Wine dumpling which has bold and vinegary flavours.

The last two dumplings got me excited. The Glenlivet is a single malt scotch whiskey dumpling known for its oaky profile of sweet vanilla and honey notes, and the Martell, cognac dumpling with its smoky and full bodied flavour. These bite-sized alcoholic treats took our taste buds on a sensory adventure.

Here’s the deal, you can enjoy Tipsy Surprise Xiao Long Bao at $2.80 (U.P.$18.80) with every order of the following exclusive dishes from now till 19 Jan 2020.

Making an exclusive comeback for a limited time period, are popular favourites such as the Pan-fried Chilli Crab Bun ($10.80/ 3 pieces). Inspired by the Shanghainese pan-fried bun (or sheng jian bao), each soft and fluffy bun is filled with flakes of crab meat in chilli crab sauce. It is pan-fried upon order hence the bottom forms a crisp golden-brown crust. There is enough filling for the chilli crab flavour to make a substantial punch. If you love dim sum, you should also try BBQ Pork Pastry in Shanghai Style ($5.80/ 3 pieces) with its flaky shell and tender meat filling.

Just as good is the Shanghainese Crispy Duck ($30/half), served with pillow-soft steamed Lotus Bun and paired with condiments like cucumber, radish and topped with sweet hoisin sauce. Dong Po Pork ($19.80) is slow-cooked for several hours to allow the pork belly to absorb the dark soy sauce. It breaks down the fatty meat, achieving that“melt in your mouth” texture.

You can order any of the four exclusive dishes to enjoy a basket of the Tipsy Surprise Xiao Long Bao (5pc) at $2.80 (U.P. $18.80). The promotion is available exclusively at the Funan outlet from now till 19 January 2020.

If you are dining here with your colleagues, order a few more of their signature dishes to share. Scrambled Egg White with Fish and Dried Scallop ($13.80), or Sai Pang Xie, was created by a brilliant chef to imitate the taste and texture of crab meat. It goes well with the Fried Rice with Crispy Pork Chop ($13.80). The fried rice itself was an absolute delight with its good wok-hei and amazingly delicious pork chop. Our finale was the huge bowl of Poached Sliced Fish in Szechuan Chilli Oil ($24.80). The fish was delicately textured, with a fiery kick from the extravagant quantities of dried chillies and Sichuan pepper that lent their flavours to the oil.

The Social Outcast – Restaurant Quality Burgers at Coffee Shop Prices

Love that smoky, charred flavour that a charcoal grill offers? Look no further than The Social Outcast, a Muslim-owned western food stall in the East that dishes out delicious burgers and pasta!

The Social Outcast uses a Kopa oven to impart a smoky, char-grilled flavour to their food. This oven is a commercial grade charcoal oven, that can reach temperatures of over 450 degrees celsius! This high heat seals in the juices of their burger patties, keeping them moist and juicy long after they have been prepared.

We ordered the classic French Onion and Mushroom Burger ($10.90, + $1 for cheese), which comes topped with caramelised mushrooms and onions cooked in the Kopa oven. Even the brioche buns were toasted in there!

SocialOutcast_Burger_Portraitcrop2
SocialOutcast_Burger_Landscape
SocialOutcast_Burger_Portraitcrop
SocialOutcast_chip_Portraitcrop

The first thing I noticed when I collected my order was that the burger was literally glistening, a sure sign that this burger was juicy and succulent. Sure enough, the burger was moist and not dry at all. The sweetness from the onions complemented the burger well, and the mushrooms added texture and earthiness. While the burger was amazing, I felt that the side dish of potato chips and mentaiko sauce paled in comparison. The chips (which I am fairly sure are calbee spicy chips) were good and added a nice crunch, but the mentaiko sauce did not impart much flavour.

SocialOutcast_ChickenSkin_Landscape
SocialOutcast_Chickenskin_Portraitcrop

Chicken Skin, much like pork lard, is a guilty pleasure of mine, so I just had to give the Crispy Chicken Skin ($5.90), a try. Sprinkled atop the deep-fried skin was roasted seaweed and sesame powder, adding a layer of flavour and umami to the dish. While the skin had a satisfying crunch, I felt that it lacked depth, leading to the seaweed powder becoming the main flavour.

SocialOutcast_Pestopasta_Landscape
SocialOutcast_Pastapull_Landscape

Next up, we tried the Basil Pesto with Grilled Portobello Mushroom ($7.50). The pesto was light and refreshing, with ample amounts of herbs providing a fresh, clean taste. The roasted cashews give the sauce its body, making this pasta dish surprisingly hearty for a vegetarian option. The portobello mushrooms provided a meatiness to the dish making it more substantial. However, I found that both the pesto and mushrooms were too salty, which was a slight blemish against what would have been an overall good pasta.

SocialOutcast_Storefront_Landscape

When asked about the story behind a name like The Social Outcast, mercurial owner and Chef Mint (not pictured) stated that his restaurant was all about breaking social norms. This Muslim owned eatery in particular, was out to prove that a coffee shop western stall could also provide restaurant-quality food, without a hefty price tag.

I would say that The Social Outcast has achieved its goal, dishing out quality dishes that you would not be able to find in your run-of-the-mill coffee shop western joint. While the prices may be slightly above what some customers would be willing to pay, this innovative burger joint is definitely worth a try, even if you do not live in the East!

Special Chilli Yong Tau Foo – Cheap Yong Tau Foo With A Unique Chilli Sauce

Special Chilli Yong Tau Foo is known for their special chilli sauce. But, is that the only reason why they’re special? The first time my colleague came here, it was only 10.30 am, but they were already sold out. Hence, I made it a point to go there extra early.

Despite my early arrival, the bucket of chilli sauce was already running out. SMH.

I immediately made my way to pick out the ingredients for my bowl. There were so many fresh items on display. When I passed my bowl to the uncle, he took it from me and told me he’ll bring it to me later. After awhile, another uncle ambled over with my yong tau foo in hand. I didn’t even tell them my table number or anything, just the general direction where my table was at. Somehow, they remembered my face. Amazing.

special chilli dry set 45
special chilli mixing noodles
special chilli bee hoon mee lift

This bowl of dry yong tau foo amounted to just $3.90! And here I was, expecting it to be at least $5 as I took quite a few ingredients, some of them more premium than others. The bowl of noodles came with the chilli sauce. Give the noodles a good toss and dig in!

The noodles were nicely coated with the sauce (it clung onto the noodles very well) and thus were very flavourful. The chilli tasted like a mix of sweet yong tau foo sauce and yong tau foo chilli. The chilli lent some heat but it was manageable, and very shiok to eat. The sauce just went well with everything. I can see why it’s so special.

special chilli bittergourd

Even the bitter gourd, which is usually unpalatable to me, tasted great.

special chilli soup set

There is no minimum amount of ingredients you have to take, so you can grab as few or as many as you want. $2.90 for a bowl of yong tau foo with five items and soup? I think it will be tough to find a better deal.

special chilli tau kwa lift

The soup set comes with a small saucer of their special chilli for you to dip your ingredients in. I prefer the dry version to be honest, as everything comes coated in the sauce. However, if you don’t feel like having the chilli on everything, the soup set is great for you as you can control how much chilli you’re getting on your tau kwa. The soup was pretty much your standard yong tau foo soup, but less oily and more clean tasting than most.

Even without the special chilli, the price point of the yong tau foo makes this such a great find. Do come early (preferably before lunchtime), else you’ll be looking at a shuttered stall!

Kamome Bakery – Experience A Small Part Of Japan With Their Breads & Sandwiches!

Kamome Bakery (translated to seagull bakery), is a new Japanese bakery that opened in Goldhill Shopping Centre.

kamome bakery showcase
kamome bakery fridge

Stepping into the bakery is like entering a bakery in Japan. There were display shelves of Japanese-inspired bread and even a chiller with sandwiches!

kamome bakery overview

I was at a loss — there were just too many different interesting looking bread! I was looking at unique flavours that aren’t commonly found in local bakeries. If it were possible, I would try everything.

kamome bakery mascarpone lemmon
kamome bakery red bean and butter

We started with the sweet “sandwiches”. The Mascarpone Lemmon ($3) is a French bread that’s been piped full of mascarpone cheese. Mascarpone cheese is known to be rather light and creamy. However, the cheese was quite heavy and tasted more like American cream cheese. This will definitely appeal to those who love cream cheese, but not really to me.

The Red Bean & Butter ($3) is a very typical Japanese combination. The slab of butter peeking out of the bread was reminiscent of kaya toast. It gave a salty edge to the red bean, and helped to moisten it too, as the red bean was kind of dry. The red bean was smooth and not overly sweet. It was my favourite of the two.

kamome bakery yuzu chestnut
kamome bakery banana and brown sugar 2

The bread that caught my attention the most was the Yuzu Chestnut ($3.40). I was curious to see how they would harmonise the two contrasting flavours. Turns out, the bread was mixed with yuzu zest, and the chestnuts were really the only element that flavoured and sweetened the bread. It was a little underwhelming. Maybe it would be better if there was a yuzu chestnut purée filling instead.

Next, I tried the Banana and Brown Sugar ($3.40). Bananas slices were placed on a pastry base and sprinkled with coconut shavings. The thin pastry was still crispy and was so much easier to eat than the previous breads. The bananas have been caramelised and kind of tasted like goreng pisang, except without the fried batter. The coconut shavings were just lightly sweet and the taste did not overpower that of the bananas. Yum!

kamome bakery pork cutlet sandwich cut

At long last, it was time to try the Pork Cutlet (Tonkatsu) Sandwich w/ vege ($5.60). Visually, it looked amazing. You bet I got a pic for the gram. And, cutting into this was, thankfully, a lot easier compared to the others. However, the cutlet was not crispy anymore. In fact, it was cold and kind of hard. It’s a shame really, as I think it would be really good if it was fresh out of the fryer.

kamome bakery cafe latte

Tea and coffee is served here too! I got a cup of cafe latte ($4.60). It came with a cute shortbread. The latte itself was really easy to drink for non-coffee drinkers like me. The coffee to milk ratio was just right. If you wish for it to be sweeter, they have small packages of gum syrup (something more commonly seen in Japan) available.

kamome bakery breadkamome bakery signboard

Kamome Bakery has a lot of interesting bread options for you to choose from, and some of them are flavours you can only find in Japan! Some of them are hits, and some of them are misses, but since Kamome Bakery is still new, I’m sure they will be refining their recipes to make them all hits. I heard that they will be adding hot food in their menu soon, so that’s something to look forward to!

Five Guys – The Famous American Burger Joint Lands In Singapore!

$

In the past, watching videos of American fast food restaurants was a bittersweet affair for me. The sight of juicy beef patties and crispy fries would make me drool, but knowing that these burgers were nearly impossible to attain filled me with sadness. However, my burger dreams came true when Shake Shack opened its first outlet in October. Now, Five Guys, another American fast food institution, has opened its doors to hungry customers in Plaza Singapura. I had to pinch myself when I heard the news. Am I in burger heaven?

FIveguys_Prep_Landscape
Fiveguys_Baconburger_Portrait
Fiveguys_collage_Landscaep2

Five guys is known for giving customers the flexibility to customise their burgers. Choose from a whole host of ingredients including grilled onions and mushrooms, ketchup, mustard, hot sauce and more. Even the pickiest of eaters will find a suitable combination! I chose to go “All The Way”, which includes the classic toppings of Mayonnaise, Lettuce, Pickles, Tomatoes and Grilled onions and Mushrooms, topped with Ketchup and Mustard. It felt slightly ironic that going “All The Way” didn’t include every possible ingredient, but I guess that would have put too many strong flavours into one burger.

Fiveguys_Peaunuts_Landscape
Fiveguys_Peanutbin_Landscape

After placing your order, help yourself to a scoop of free peanuts while waiting. Peer through the glass panels and watch your burger being assembled by an army of cooks. The smell of fresh peanut oil wafts through the air, interwoven with the aroma of sizzling beef patties.

Once ready, your order number will be called. Head over to the counter and receive a brown bag, full of delicious goodies.

Within my brown bag was the cheeseburger and bacon burger ($15), regular-sized Five Guys Style fries ($9) and the Five Guys Shake ($10).

Fiveguys_Milkshake_Portrait2
Fiveguys_Fries_Landscape

What struck me first about the Five Guys burgers were how soft and fluffy their buns were. I knew beforehand that the buns were made fresh five days a week, but the quality of the bread exceeded my already high expectations! Next up was the beef patties, which were seared to perfection. The outside was crispy and slightly charred, while the middle remained juicy and tender. Simply perfect!

The hand-cut fries also did not disappoint. Fresh from the fryer, the fries were crispy, yet fluffy. They were also really well salted, making them delicious all on their own without ketchup. The fries also come in Cajun style, which has a spice mix sprinkled over. If you like your fries with a spicy kick, try this one out!

Another must get if you are trying Five Guys for the first time is their milkshake. Like the burgers, these milkshakes come with lots of customisable options for both the base flavour and toppings. The must-have topping here is the bacon bits! I know it sounds strange, but trust me, you’ll thank me later.

The milkshake itself is thick and rich, and quite filling. I liked that the milkshakes were not overly milky, and you can taste the ingredients in them.

FIveguys_Storefront_Landscape
Fiveguys_Queue_Landscape

Five Guys lives up to the hype of being a famous overseas fast food restaurant and is definitely worth a try. If you are planning to make a trip down, make sure to come slightly before Five Guys opens at 11am. A line of more than 50 people formed within half an hour of their opening!

The only gripe I have is their high price point. This may make it difficult for customers (like myself) to come back frequently. That being said, Five Guys was definitely one of the best burger experiences I’ve had this year!

4 Delicious Healthy Brown Rice Bowls to Look Out for at More Than 30 Eateries!

$

healthy bowl campaign poster-2
hpb hosts-2

In a bid to introduce wholegrain into our everyday lives, Health Promotion Board has collaborated with various F&B partners in a project called the Healthy Bowl Campaign, to incorporate healthy rice bowls into their menus.

Health Promotion Board has come up with four different wholegrain rice bowl recipes that meet the Healthier Dining Programme (HDP) guidelines as they are higher in wholegrains and are all less than 600 calories. The available flavours are Chicken, Vegetarian, Salmon, and Turkey.

For each F&B partner that signs up to offer these healthy rice bowls, Chef Johnathan will go down to the partners’ kitchens to teach them how to make each rice bowl from scratch. Partners can adopt the recipes completely, or tweak them before adding them to their menus. Partners must ensure that the tweaked dishes still abide to the HDP nutrient guidelines, which aims to help consumers manage their daily calorie intake.

Why eat wholegrains? Wholegrains are rich in fibre, vitamins, minerals and various phytochemicals (beneficial plant substances). Eating wholegrains can also help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes, while assisting in weight management as they make you feel full faster.

naturel products 2-2

The participating F&B partners can also apply for the Healthier Dining Innovation (HDI) grant of $5,000 to purchase the wholegrain rice needed to test out the new dishes at their restaurants. However, they would have to meet a certain requirement first, in order to qualify for the grant. The partner either has to have a catering license, or two outlets with an online ordering platform, or three physical outlets.

However, even if they don’t meet the requirements, they will still be able to purchase Naturel products (e.g. wholegrain rice, healthier oil) at a special price for this campaign!

The partners that will be adding the healthy bowls into their menu so far are:
– Ahmad Power Nasi Ayam
– Asia Food Cafeteria
– Caffe Pralet
– Deja Brew
– Gim Tim
– Huggs Coffee
– Imperial Court
– Kei Kaisendon
– Qian Xi Group
– Sunray Cafe
– Tim Delight

During a tasting session, we tried a few of the dishes that have already been rolled out in certain F&B establishments, or are currently in the testing stages.

ahmad power cafe salad ingredients
ahmad power cafe healthy ayam penyet

First up was the “Nasi Ayam” (healthier version) that Ahmad Power Nasi Ayam had developed. The Chicken rice bowl came with steamed chicken, honey & apple cider vinegar salad, and brown rice. A slice of green apple replaced the usual cucumber and I thought that the tartness it brought to the rice was intriguing, and I quite liked it. The rice was lightly flavoured, so it was still tasty. The steamed chicken was cooked well, and tasted fresh and firm. The honey & apple cider vinegar salad is a refreshing addition that will, no doubt, tickle your tastebuds.

caffe pralet ingredients
caffe pralet vegetarian

Next up was the Vegetarian rice bowl by Caffe Pralet, which is already up on their menu! The rice is decorated with a medley of vibrant vegetables such as red cabbage, bell pepper and iceberg lettuce, that not only brings a pop of colour to the dish, but also a burst of flavours. The fresh vegetables add a natural sweetness to the bowl. A shout out to all vegetarians – definitely have this if you’re looking for something light, yet yummy.

gim tim salmon bowl

The Salmon rice bowl from Gim Tim was calling out to me the moment I laid eyes on it. Baked salmon and a homemade miso sauce? Who could say no to that? The miso was on the slightly sweeter side, and paired really well with the salmon. As the salmon was baked, it had a crisp skin, which was just lovely. I liked this healthy bowl the best!

woah protein ice cream-2

As the awareness for healthy living increases, the number of healthier alternatives available in the market increases as well. There’s even healthier ice cream that is lower in sugar!

Woah! sells protein ice cream which comes in 3 flavours. All available flavours are under 200 calories per serving. My personal favourite was the chocolate ice cream. The ice cream wasn’t too sweet, and filled with premium dark chocolate. It was invigorating, and as gratifying as a usual scoop of my favourite ice cream is, but, with added protein.

hpb partners-2

Sunray Cafe and Huggs Coffee, who have already started selling the healthy rice bowls for a while now, said that the bowls have been well received by their customers so far (especially the salmon bowl). Not only are the bowls tasty, they are not difficult to prepare. For Sunray Cafe, their sales have increased since adding the healthy rice bowls to their menu. Sounds promising, doesn’t it?

Skinny Chef – Awesome Hearty XXL Fried Chicken Cutlet!

The name Skinny Chef came about from the stature of the two chefs, who are both very slim. Steve (pictured on the left), and Kheng Lun (on the right) are two friends who met while working in the hotel management industry, and decided to set up a hawker stall to sell the food they love the most— Western food.

skinny chef chicken cutlet top down 3

We started with their signature dish, the XXL Chicken Cutlet with Nacho Cheese and Sous Vide Egg ($9) which comes with 2 pieces of gigantic fried chicken cutlets. The nacho cheese sauce complemented the chicken cutlets very well.

skinny chef chicken sutlet slice
skinny chef chicken cutlet dip

The chicken was fried to perfection with the skin being extra crispy and the meat still tender and juicy. The nacho cheese sauce added savoury notes to the chicken, and moisten the chicken more. You can dip the chicken in the sous vide egg for more “sauce”. However, as it is such a large piece of fried chicken, I suggest that you share it with a friend. I was told that this dish is popular amongst the younger crowd, especially the kids. I can definitely see why. Which kid wouldn’t like a plate of fried chicken all to themselves?

skinny chef chicken chop plate

For those seeking something a little healthier, you can try their Chicken Chop ($6.80). Each main comes with a choice of two sides. We chose the sautéed mushroom and the baked mac and cheese.

chicken chop collage

The skin of the chicken chop has been grilled till it’s crispy. The meat was soft and incredibly succulent. All of their meats, other than the fried chicken cutlet, are cooked using the sous vide method to achieve that soft texture and juiciness.

skinny chef sauteed mushrooms fork
mac and cheese collage

The sautéed mushrooms came in a mix of button mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, and shimeiji mushrooms. The mushrooms were cooked till they were tender, while still retaining their juices. I recommend getting this as one of your sides.

The baked mac and cheese came in a small aluminium bowl. It’s done exactly like how the chefs themselves like it. To me, it tasted a little lacklustre as the cheesiness didn’t really come through. It was also saucier than I expected it to be.

skinny chef salmon cubes

Skinny Chef also has finger food and sides available. We decided to try the Deep Fried Salmon Belly Bites ($3.50). We learnt that the chefs, to prevent wastage, are making use of the salmon belly that they cut off from the salmon fillets to make these. They marinade the belly in a brown sugar brine, which gave the fish a unique sweetness. The tender fish was covered in a crispy batter that made it so addictive! Do squeeze some lemon on top to cut through the richness and balance out the sweetness. It’s certainly something that I’ve never tasted before. I imagine that it would go really well with a nice cold glass of beer.

Skinny Chef is definitely worth a trip down to Clementi. Come in the evening for some good food and a round of drinks!

Green Sky Fried Kway Teow – One of the Best Fried Oysters & Char Kway Teow in Singapore!

Sunny(pictured on the left), a past army chef, opened Green Sky Fried Kway Teow back in 2006. His father was a hawker as well, but was selling something entirely different — traditional desserts. When he was younger, he helped his father out at his stall, which gave him the much needed experience to be a hawker. His son (pictured in the middle), joined him in manning the stall when he was 16, and has worked here ever since.

The Cockles Fried Kway Teow ($4) was the result of rounds of trial and error. Coming from a background of dessert making, he had to keep practising to master savoury dishes. He used his time as an army chef to try cooking as many savoury dishes as possible.

green sky fried kway teow spoon
green sky cockle

The kway teow had a lovely wok hei, and was so flavourful. The noodles were also “wet” enough, which made it easy to eat. The cockles were cooked really well such that they were not rubbery. Mix in some of the chilli for a more shiok experience. Overall, it was a very solid plate of char kway teow.

green sky frying carrot cake 2
green sky carrot cake
green sky fried carrot cake collageThe Fried Carrot Cake (White + Black) ($5) comprised both white and black carrot cake. The white carrot cake was fried till the edges were crispy. The carrot cake itself was savoury because of the addition of chai poh. This was one of the better white carrot cakes that I’ve ever had. It was a simple plate of eggy goodness. The black carrot cake was sweet from the black sauce, and was as fragrant as the white carrot cake. Normally, I would prefer black carrot cake, but I liked the white carrot cake here better. My colleagues preferred the black version though.

green sky fried oyster frying

The Fried Oysters’ ($5) batter was sooo good. Can you see the texture? Yeah, it’s as crispy as it looks! Get some of those ASMR tingles when you crunch down on the batter. As yummy as it was, the fried batter was also really greasy. My throat felt a little sore afterwards so please drink lots of water after eating this.

green sky oyster 2

The plump oysters were cooked just right like the cockles. Smooth, and not rubbery as well. They were, unfortunately, not the freshest. Overall, the dish was really good, actually it’s one of the best fried oysters I’ve had, and also one of the rare places where I like the batter more than the oysters.

Tiger Street Lab – Pair Da Shi Jia’s Signature Dishes With Ice Cold Tiger Beer!

Whenever someone mentions having a meal at Jewel @ Changi Airport, the first thing many Singaporeans think of is the snaking queues at fast food joints such as Shake Shack and A&W. Little do people know that fantastic local cuisine and freshest local beer await them at Tiger Street Lab!

Tiger Street Lab is the brand’s first global experiential concept store, inviting both locals and international visitors to try the culinary creations of talented local chefs. This time round, Tiger partnered with Da Shi Jia (大食家), a zi char restaurant that has been serving great local food for decades. Da Shi Jia’s signature Wok-Fried King Prawn White Bee Hoon and other delicious local dishes will be featured on the menu for six months, alongside specially created Tiger beer-infused bites!

DSCF3064-12

The Wok-Fried King Prawn White Bee Hoon ($18.80) definitely lives up to the hype of being one of Da Shi Jia Big Prawn Mee’s signature dishes. Fresh king prawns are fried at high heat to impart a beautiful wok hei to the white bee hoon, before a rich prawn broth is added and the creation is left to simmer. Bee hoon is the perfect noodle choice for this dish, with every last drop of delicious sauce clinging to every strand. Poking out from within the nest of noodles are the huge king prawns, which are succulent and tender. Each bite of this dish is simply overflowing with umami, and I am drooling just thinking about this dish again! Definitely coming back again just for this dish!

DSCF3124-16
Seen here is the Shiok Ale on the left, and Tiger White on the right.

Accompanying the menu revamp is the debut of a new fresh-from-the-tap seasonal Tiger Beer – the Shiok Ale. Double the hops for double the shiok-ness, the medium-full bodied golden ale has a creamy head and delights the palate with a tropical medley of pineapple and passionfruit notes. This refreshing seasonal brew pairs best with the aforementioned savoury Wok-Fried King Prawn White Bee Hoon.

IMG_0487-25

What’s more, treat yourself to some culinary theatrics while waiting for this dish to be prepared! Peek through the glass windows of the kitchen and admire Chef Seth Sim masterfully fry your meal, battling scorching flames that are so tall they almost touched the kitchen’s ceiling. Watching a master at work filled me with a newfound admiration for the level of skill and technique that goes into each and every dish!

DSCF3042-7
DSCF3011-1

Now that you’ve whet your appetite, go all in on the prawn party and order the Handmade Beancurd Skin Prawn Roll ($15.80). The springy minced prawns and light and crispy beancurd skin make a winning combination. Be sure to dip the prawn roll into the mayonnaise!

If curry is more your style, check out the Indonesian Curry King Prawns ($34.80). This curry features the same huge king prawns as the signature King Prawn White Bee Hoon, so you know you’re in for a treat! The prawns add a deep prawn flavour, which is amplified by the various spices used in the curry. The curry sauce also has just the right amount of coconut milk, making it thick and hearty without being overly rich and jelak. Make sure to wipe up all of that delicious curry with the light and fluffy fried Mini Mantou!

DSCF3029-5
DSCF3132-18

Allergic to prawns but still love seafood? Tiger Street Lab has just the thing for you! The Nyonya Sambal Stingray ($16.80) is quite different from your usual hawker fare but equally delicious. The sambal used is more fragrant than typical sambal stingray, which has bold, assertive flavours and is often quite spicy. Fresh onions and calamansi lime juice add a pop of freshness to the dish as well. Stingray lovers, definitely give this a try!

Another unique seafood dish is the Pickled Garlic Fried Barramundi Fillet ($18.80). Locally-farmed fresh barramundi is used for this dish to ensure that the fish is fresh. The fillet is lightly fried till golden brown, while the pickled garlic adds a unique umami, and subtle garlic flavour to the dish.

DSCF3085-13

Pair your favourite Tiger Beer with the Trio Sampler ($18.80) of Sambal Quail Eggs, Salt Pepper Shrimp and Tiger-infused Crispy Baby Sotong! All three snacks are bite-sized flavour bombs, perfectly designed to be complemented with a refreshing ice cold Tiger Beer. My personal favourite was the Tiger-infused Crispy Baby Sotong, which has Tiger Radler Lemon incorporated into the sauce. The Tiger Radler Lemon added a fresh, subtle tanginess to the crunchy sotong, making the dish even more addictive!

DSCF3136-19

The Tiger Beer-Battered Assortment ($18.80) incorporates beer into its batter. Here, the beer adds a hoppy aroma to the fried chicken, bananas, mushrooms, baby squids and scallops. If you love variety, this dish is definitely for you!

IMG_0435-20

After a great meal, stick around Tiger Street Lab and customise your very own bottle of Tiger Beer by adding your name and picking your own bottle labels! You can even represent your local neighbourhood with district labels — custom bottle labels which depict famous landmarks within each area of Singapore, such as the Chinese Gardens in Jurong or Chomp Chomp Food Centre in Serangoon!

Be it for a family gathering or a couple of beers with friends, Tiger Street Lab seems to be the perfect place. Great food, stellar drinks and the wonderful atmosphere definitely make Tiger Street Lab one of Jewel @ Changi Airport’s premier dining destinations. So whether you’re coming to pick up your loved ones or to fly off for a holiday, drop by Tiger Street Lab at Jewel @ Changi Airport for unique beers and fantastic local fare!

6 Hawker Stalls with Healthier Wholegrain Options

$

We grew up eating white rice as our main staple. It’s hard to give up rice but having too much of refined carbohydrates such as white rice and bread can lead to a higher risk of type 2 diabetes. Thankfully, we have no lack of wholegrain options in Singapore. Consuming a diet rich in wholegrain is good for health as it may lower the risk of developing chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.

Wholegrain rice and noodles are now widely available so hawkers can prepare healthier traditional dishes without compromising on the taste. Here are six hawker stalls you should try.

Chow Kee

I remember constantly craving for mui fan when I was growing up. Every time my grandfather asked what I want for dinner from a tze-char store, it’s always, and only, mui fan. There is something about that savoury gravy that I just really enjoy. That was why I was exceptionally excited to try Chow Kee. The owner, Mr Cheong, has replaced white vermicelli with a wholegrain version, and he mixes white rice with brown. The Seafood Mui Fan features a satisfying portion of brown and white rice in a flavorsome gravy. The gravy brings out the flavour and freshness of the seafood. When eaten together with the mixed brown rice, each mouthful is so comforting. They also serve beef mui fan, sliced fish mui fan and sweet and sour pork with brown rice.

Cho Kee Noodle

Cho Kee has been selling wanton mee since 1965 and is now being run by the third generation of the Cho Kee family. What makes them special? It’s definitely their handmade noodles. Besides egg noodle, Cho Kee offers five other varieties of noodles — spinach, tomato, seaweed, multigrain and vegetable — all of which are made in their central kitchen. We went for the multigrain noodles which are very springy and did not have any alkaline taste. The noodles absorbed all the flavours of their specially concocted sauce and paired well with the plump and juicy dumplings. This new-generation hawker definitely deserves our support!

ABC Deji Fish Head Bee Hoon

A bowl of satisfying fish soup from ABC Deji Fish Bee Hoon warms the stomach. The lines here can be massive during lunchtime. But when you finally make it to the front, you will get a light, savoury broth served with a healthy portion of fresh fish. There is fried fish meat, sliced fish, or both, which is known as Double Fish. I like the Double Fish option because you are immediately presented with two different version of fish. Since we are already eating healthier here, we opted for the brown rice vermicelli. The vermicelli turned out to be a lot better than I expected. The delicate bee hoon are served together with slices of tomato, chye sim, and napa cabbage, which added more flavour to the broth. You can also add on tofu or bitter gourd. The chilli sauce is piquant and aromatic too. Nothing beats a bowl of hearty and wholesome fish bee hoon for lunch or dinner.

Hwa Yuen Porridge

There’s nothing more comforting like a hot bowl of porridge to start the day. Veronica’s father-in-law came from Hong Kong and started selling porridge in a pushcart along Kim Pong Road before moving to Tiong Bahru Market. “We mix both white and brown rice in our porridge. It’s healthier,” shared Veronica. The rice in this porridge is cooked down till a very fine consistency so it almost feels like you are drinking a rich, creamy soup. There are seven types of porridge combinations to choose from. If you can’t decide, go for the classic Mixed Pig’s Organ Porridge which has sliced pork, pig’s liver, intestines and more. They also serve fish porridge, frog leg porridge and shredded chicken century egg porridge.

Zhao Ji Hainanese Chicken Rice

Zhao Ji Hainanese Chicken Rice offers something different – Brown Chicken Rice. That’s right. While I was there for lunch, many senior folks ordered this dish. I was pleasantly surprised as I thought they wouldn’t like to eat brown rice. “I cook my brown rice in a pressure cooker, hence it is really soft and easy to chew,” explained Ryan, the owner of Zhao Ji Hainanese Chicken Rice. The chicken is marinated with turmeric and cooked at constant temperature. To ensure that the chicken meat is tender and juicy, he soaks the blanched chickens in ice water. He also cooks the brown rice with his own secret ingredients which makes it tasty and enjoyable! Order the chicken rice set which comes with a generous portion of vegetables to complete the meal.

Healthy Vegetarian

I think that chap cai png, also known as mixed vegetable rice or economy rice, is a reliable go-to for every Singaporean, especially when we are in need of a quick lunch fix. What’s even better is that there are healthier options such as wholegrains. An unassuming stall in Aljunied Market & Food Centre, Healthy Vegetarian is a popular stall amongst my friends who are vegetarians. I like the fact that I can choose what I want from the 10-15 dishes available. We had three different vegetables and a beancurd roll. I skip the gravy most of the time to enjoy the original flavour of the dishes. The unique fragrance of steamed mui choy made us salivate. As always, pair the savoury ingredients with a bowl of steaming mixed brown rice and you have yourself a great meal which makes you feel full longer!

If you dine out in a hawker centre frequently, you may notice that many stalls offer healthier wholegrain versions of the usual refined carbohydrates staples such as white bread, rice and noodles. Keep a lookout the next time you dine at the hawker centre and give the wholegrain options a go. Tasty food can be healthier too!

Afandi Hawa and Family Mee Rebus – Mee Rebus Made With Shrimp, Crab & Mutton?!

Afandi Hawa storefrontAfandi Hawa begedil

Tucked away in Haig Road Market & Food Centre is Afandi Hawa & Family Mee Rebus, a stall specialising in Malay cuisine.

Afandi Hawa mee rebus
Afandi Hawa lime squeeze
Afandi Hawa mee rebus lift

We tried the dish that made Afandi Hawa & Family famous — the Mee Rebus ($3). My first impression was that the gravy was THICC. Its viscosity came from the sweet potato puree that they add to the gravy. Despite being thick, the gravy still tasted lighter than usual. I heard the gravy is made with shrimp, flower crab, and mutton. That is why I was so surprised that the taste could be so light. The gravy was mostly savoury, and just a tad sweet. This plate of mee rebus is a refreshing change to what I’m used to, but I do not mind it at all.

If you’re lucky, you may be able to get a few pieces of mutton in your gravy.

Afandi Hawa gado gado
Afandi Hawa gado gado spoon 2
Afandi Hawa dip

This was actually my first time having Gado-gado ($3)! It comprised cabbage, potatoes, tempeh, rice cakes, fish crackers(my favourite part) and a sweet and slightly spicy peanut sauce. The spicy peanut sauce tasted similar to satay peanut sauce. While I’m not usually a fan of tempeh, I think the sauce worked well to mask most of the fermented taste. I especially liked dipping the fish crackers in the sauce. The crunch plus the sweet and savoury combo earned a stamp of approval from me!

Afandi Hawa ayam soto 3Afandi Hawa soupAfandi Hawa ayam soto ingredients 2

Last but not least, we had the Soto Ayam ($3). I really, really loved the soup. It was just brimming with chicken flavour! The soup here was also much less greasy than most soto ayam that I’ve had. As you can tell from the image above, the soup was clear of oil puddles.

The strips of chicken were tender, but dry. I imagine they must have been boiling in the soup for a while.

Afandi Hawa chilli

Please proceed with caution here. The chilli is really spicy so try a bit of it first before mixing the whole spoon into your soup. This is the kind of chilli that will leaving a burning sensation in your throat. Other than that, I really like the sweetness it added to the soup.

Afandi Hawa begedil lift

I was feeling peckish, so I got an extra begedil, ($0.50) which is something I always order when having Malay food. It was well seasoned but it had been soaking in my soup so it became a little soggy. Note to self: next time, get the begedil on a separate plate.

Afandi Hawa & Family Mee Rebus does their dishes really well and lives up to their reputation!

Earth Jar Treasure – You Won’t Need The Doctor After Drinking These Soups!

If you want a good bowl of herbal soup, Earth Jar Treasure is the place to go. As their signage says, their soups are “health in a bowl”. You can expect the soups here to be nothing but herbalicious.

earth jar treasure sign

What’s more, the soups are broiled in these small earthen jar pots, which helps to lock in all the flavours in just that one bowl. You know it’s going to be intense.

earth jar treasure soup cabinet

Let’s start with the mildest soup of the lot. Even if you’re not a fan of herbal soups, this will delight your tastebuds nonetheless. The Healthy Chicken Soup ($6.50) is a solid bowl of herbal chicken broth.

chicken lift

Even though the herbs that came in a big pouch seemed like it would overpower the chicken flavour, they actually accentuated it. The chicken was tender but quite dry. Regardless, I imagine this soup would be really comforting in this rainy season. If you’re not used to herbal soups yet, this would be the safest choice as an introduction.

chicken soup pour 2

The Cultivate Blood Black Chicken Soup ($7) was like the sweeter, more herbaceous cousin of the Healthy Chicken Soup. Just the name itself sounds so traditional. But my oh my, this soup really tasted premium.

black chicken soup pour

Mind you, while the chicken stock is the base of the soup, it’s really the herbs that take centre stage here, and they’re quite potent. The sweetness that I mentioned earlier came from the honey dates that they added into the broth, which is said to tonify blood (fits into the whole cultivating blood theme I suppose.)

The black chicken somehow wasn’t as dry as the previous chicken, so I enjoyed eating it with my rice.

earth jar treasure black chicken

I purposely saved the Salted Veg Duck Soup ($6) for last. My gut told me that it would be the strongest tasting one, and I was right.

My eyes popped open the moment the first sip hit my tongue. This was the most potent soup yet. And by potent, I mean very salty and very sour.

As someone who was actively prevented from drinking this soup when I was younger, I didn’t know what the norm was supposed to be. So, I consulted my colleague, who said that the tang from the salted vegetables was pretty much expected. However, it is a lot saltier than most.

earth jar treasure duck

There’s half a pod of chilli added into the soup, which gave it a bit of spice as well. I guess this soup would be the epitome of what all Chinese grandparents would call “heaty”.

The duck was tender enough for you to lift the meat off the bones with your chopsticks. All the taste of the duck has basically seeped into the soup, so what you’re left with is just some good old duck without the distinctive taste.

You would have to consume this soup with a bowl of rice ($0.50/bowl)! I recommend getting the cabbage rice, as it is the same price as the white rice, but a lot more fragrant and yummy.

earth jar treasure big pot collage

I was curious about what the gigantic earthen pots at the front of the stall contained, so the owner graciously let me sneak a peek. Inside the pots was Great Health Duck Soup that was broiling at the moment. I regret not finding out sooner, as I would’ve given it a try too.

If you love herbal soups, you definitely do not want to miss Earth Jar Treasure. They are open daily except for alternate Mondays, so be sure to check their Facebook page before you head over.

Jia He Chinese Restaurant – Traditional Chinese Cuisine, Reimagined!

“If you could only eat one cuisine for the rest of your life, what would it be?”

Whenever I get asked this question at a party or gathering, I always find myself gravitating towards good old Chinese cuisine. Don’t get me wrong, I still love sushi and tacos, but Chinese food will always bring back warm memories of time spent with family over a great meal. Great company always makes a meal taste better, I say!

Nowhere is this concept of family bonding embraced more fully than at Jia He Chinese Restaurant. The restaurant’s name is based on the Chinese idiom 家和万事兴, which translates to “if the family lives in harmony all affairs will prosper”. Rooted in this philosophy, Jia He’s team of expert chefs have created a menu which features both classic Chinese delicacies and contemporary creations for everyone to enjoy!

Begin your feast with an impressive selection of masterfully crafted dim sum offerings. The Steamed Xiao Long Bao with Ba Kut Teh ($8 for 6 pieces) is made with Bak Kut Teh herbs and spices. This combination of xiao long bao and bak kut teh is a truly innovative fusion dish! The peppery and garlicky Bak Kut Teh is prominent, yet does not overpower the taste of the dumpling. Beetroot juice is used to dye the dumpling skin a lovely shade of pink, making this dim sum extra classy.

Variety is key when ordering dim sum, so don’t miss out on other classics such as Steamed Custard Buns with Salted Egg Yolk ($6.00 for 3 pieces), Steamed Phoenix Prawn Siew Mai ($7.80 for 3 pieces) and Deep-fried Yam Dumplings with Minced Meat ($5.50 for 3 pieces), which have been shaped to resemble elegant swans.

Before you move on to the main courses, try the Sauteed Crab Legs with Spices ($12) which was one of my favourite dishes. The crab meat was delicate and tender, and it was fried to a perfect golden brown. Make sure to dip the legs into the spice mix for a flavourful punch! Also check out the Pan-fried Bacon wrapped with Tomato served with Salad Cream ($12), an interesting appetiser that combines sweet cherry tomatoes with smoky bacon. Pop one of these into your mouth and experience a burst of tomatoey goodness!

Here at Jia He, you will be able to feast on all the ocean has to offer. First up was the Baked Crab with Salted Egg Yolk and Pumpkin (seasonal price), where huge pieces of Sri Lankan crab are coated in a thick sauce made with salted egg and pumpkin. The crab meat was incredibly fresh and firm, while the salty-sweet flavour profile of the sauce complements the crab meat well. Another great dish is the Deep-fried Prawn with Mustard Seed and Homemade Sesame Sauce ($24). The sesame sauce provides a robust, earthy flavour that amplifies the taste of the deep fried prawns. Definitely a unique dish that is worth the calories!

_Z3A8444-16

_Z3A8472-18

Peking Duck is the highlight of many Chinese dinners, and Jia He pulls out all the stops to bring you an exquisite Peking Duck ($48) experience. Their duck is air dried for 24 hours before being barbecued, which ensures that the duck skin – the most important part of Peking Duck – crisps up extremely well. Wrap the skin with the traditional accompaniments of julienned cucumber, spring onion and plum sauce for a delectable mouthful.

_Z3A8521-23

_Z3A8526-24

The Crispy Hor Fun with Seafood and Egg Sauce ($18) is a multi-sensory extravaganza that everyone must order. Feast your eyes on the tall, interwoven nest of fried Hor Fun and watch in wonder as it disappears when the Egg Sauce is drizzled over. Listen closely, and you will hear a crackling sound as the sauce softens the crispy noodles. This dish is best enjoyed immediately, while the hor fun is still crispy.

Another unique dish is the Jia He Roasted Crispy Chicken with Tangerine Peel ($32). The tangerine adds a light and refreshing citrus note to the chicken, complementing the smoky, roasted flavour well. The chicken meat is juicy and tender, while the skin reminds me slightly of Peking Duck skin!

_Z3A8575-39

Round off your meal on a sweet note! Durian lovers like myself will definitely enjoy the Deep-fried Sesame Ball with Durian ($6 per piece)! A thick, luscious durian paste is encased within a crispy and light batter. The sesame seeds add a fragrant, nutty flavour to the durian as well. The Chilled Black Glutinous Rice with Ice-cream ($6) expertly combines elements of differing temperatures, with the cold ice cream and warm glutinous rice combining for a luxurious mouthful.

Flourful Delight 知味面点 – Stellar Xiao Long Bao & Noodles at Golden Mile Food Center

Xiao Long Bao and Zha Jiang Mian. Name a better duo. I’ll wait. These two dishes are among the most loved dishes of Chinese cuisine, and are must-orders for me whenever I go to restaurants such as Crystal Jade or Din Tai Fung. Imagine my joy when I found Flourful Delight in Golden Mile Food Center selling Xiao Long Bao and noodles that can give these established restaurants a run for their money!

A basket of seven xiao long bao from Flourful Delight
Flourful_XLBdip_Portrait

The first thing I noticed when I approached Flourful Delight 知味面点 is their workbench, which is covered in flour and balls of dough. I immediately realised that the father-and-son duo who runs Flourful Delight make their dumpling skin by hand. If that isn’t a sign of quality, I don’t know what is!

Upon ordering my Xiao Long Bao ($5.50 for 6 pieces), I was told to wait for about 10 minutes to let the dumplings steam. Once they were ready, make sure to let them cool slightly, or the hot soup contained within may burn your tongue. I speak from experience, because that’s exactly what happened to me when I took a bite of these dumplings. What can I say, they looked so good that I got impatient!

Subpar Xiao Long Baos often have a thick, chewy skin, which makes it hard to get to the delicious broth within. What makes Flourful Delight’s Xiao Long Bao stand out is how delicately thin the dumpling skin is, while still being strong enough to remain intact when you pick them up with your chopsticks. Pair these dumplings with some vinegar and ginger slices to cut through the richness of the pork broth!

Flourful delight also offers a wide range of delicious noodle dishes. I ordered two classics, Zha Jiang Mian ($4.50) and Dan Dan Mian ($4). The Zha Jiang Mian consists of minced meat and a fermented soybean sauce, while Dan Dan Mian features a peanut sauce with chilli oil and vinegar.

What impressed me the most was the quality of the noodles, which were springy and chewy. With the relatively simple sauces, the quality and doneness of the noodles can be noticed immediately. The noodles here were perfectly cooked!

While simple, these noodle dishes were quite substantial, filling me up rather quickly. Because of this, I preferred the Dan Dan Mian, which had a dash of vinegar to cut through the dish and make it more appetising.

Flourful Delight Stall Front

I am sure that it is only a matter of time before this relatively new hawker stall, with its high-quality dishes, attracts a loyal fanbase. I, for one, am now a fan, and I will definitely be back for more!
