Along Prinsep Street amidst the buzzing activities of the various restaurants, cafeterias, offices and schools is Captain K Seafood Tower, a new Korean Seafood concept that will surely delight seafood and shellfish lovers.
Captain K, a name cleverly coined by the founders and owners to signify the captain of the steam-boat, steering and pioneering new culinary creations for food lovers. K implies anything Korean, and we can expect that after Captain K Seafood Tower, there will be other Captain K food outlets adding to the multitude of Korean inspired food choices in Singapore.
Presenting Korea’s latest culinary sensation is this visually exciting Korean Seafood Tower, or Nine Layers of Steamed Shells as it may be known in other parts of Asia. It is the latest steamboat craze that is bound to take Singapore by storm.
Varieties of seafood are cooked layer by layer from top to bottom. After more than 30 minutes of waiting, our food is finally here! Starting from the layers top down, we started with steamed scallops marinated in garlic and scallipn. They were huge and plump, which goes well with the Thai chilli sauce. Unfortunately, the next few layers such as oysters and squid with rice were steamed for too long till they were a little too dry. The prawns were decent with a mild sweetness and nice crunch though.
Here comes the luxurious items such as lobsters, Alaskan crabs, mantis shrimps, clams and mussels. As the seafood is steamed, the delicious and yummy juices are collected at the base, it forms a highly flavourful soup base.
It comes in three variations, from a classic Kombu Dashi to a housemade Korean kimchi stew, to a uniquely Korean inspired chicken ginseng broth. You can add on extra ingredients such as pork slices, sausages, luncheon meat, maggi mee, fish ball, fish cakes, vegetables etc. The pricing of each ala carte ingredients are dependent by the different coloured plates, just like a sushi restaurant. We had the thick kimchi stew which is rich in crustacean flavours but was way tooooooo salty on that day.
The restaurant needs to tighten up the process to live up to its hype. There should be a better queue system, shorter waiting hours, and perhaps a more precise steaming time so that the seafood won’t go too dry towards the end.
9 layers of seafood tower can serve roughly 8 people and the restaurant caters for different sizes of patrons at different prices, and drinks such as soft drinks, barley tea are inclusive of the charges.
Pricing:
3 layers good for 2 pax: $52.90
5 layers good for 5 pax: $98.90
7 layers good for 6 pax: $188.90
9 layers good for 8 pax: $288.90
Other drinks that will be served at additional charges include Korean beer, Korean soju bomb and a special watermelon soju. All are meant to go refreshingly well with the steamed seafood with natural flavours.
