Tucked in a corner at the forth level of Beauty World Centre, Dulukala Peranakan Restaurant is a no-frills Peranakan restaurant. It is a family run affair and has been a regular dinner location for many Peranakans.

Lunch started with appetizers like Ngoh Hiang ($11.90) that is folded into flat rectangular pieces instead of rolling it into individual balls or sausage rolls. A heady scent of five spice powder permeates the pork and prawn mixture, while water chestnuts lend their welcome sweetness. Otah Otah ($5.90) was grilled to a golden orange hue with thick pieces of fish meat in spices. Their sambal belachan is a must have in every table. Bakwan Kepiting ($12.90) is a must-have dish in many Peranakan households during festivals such as Chinese New Year. These meatballs pack a punch with the perfect combination of bamboo shoot and cabbage in a clear broth.

A meal at Dulukala feels like I am having home cooked food in a friend’s house. I am always very appreciative when I have Ayam Buah Keluak because it is such a labour intensive Peranakan dish. The classic Ayam Buah Keluak ($13.90) combines tender chicken chunks with keluak that is stuffed meticulously with prawn paste. The black gold is braised with a heady mix of Nyonya spices, resulting in a fragrant gravy that bursts in flavours. It goes well with rice, combined with Nonya Chap Chye ($10.90) featuring cabbage, black fungus and mushrooms.

Chendol ($3.50) ends our lunch on a high note with delectable green pandan jelly strips and rich gula melaka drizzled into the bowl of ice. This thick and rich syrup is sweet and savoury, which elevated this chendol above others. It is no wonder they are voted as one of the best chendol in Singapore.
Lunch set menus is available from 11.30am to 3pm from Monday to Friday. Enjoy Ayam Buah Keluak set, Lor Bak set, Beef Rendang set, Assam Fish set, Sambal Fish set, Ayam Rendang set, Ayam Curry Set or Babi Pongteh set from $12.90. Dinner set starts from $79.90 for 4 pax to $108.90 for 6 pax.
