My parents and I always take turns suggesting a place to settle our brunch so I came to know about Sixth Avenue Briyani Specialist through them. This is indeed a sinful meal to begin the day but how can anyone resist the best Nasi Briyani in Singapore?! We are not exaggerating but this stall is superb. With more than 28 years of history and handing over to the new generation of hawker, this stall still lives up to its reputation for serving flavoursome Nasi Briyani. Although it opens as early as 6.30am, the briyani are only sold after 10.30am.
You’ll have to make do with their roti prata(s) in the mornings. We tried their plain prata and egg prata ($2.70 in total). This Indian specialty is pleasing to the palate and the eyes. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, the prata(s) here hits the spot every time. This South-Indian flat bread made by frying stretched dough flavoured with butter is usually served with chicken, fish or mutton curry. The toughest part of making prata is stretching the dough. Since I was a child, I’ve always been bewildered by the prata-uncles whenever they attempt to whirl and twirl the dough until it is paper thin and four to five times larger than the original piece. I’ve always been impressed by their skilful motion before the prata is cooked o a greased griddle. Don’t worry about looking unglamorous as the highly recommended way to eat prata is to dig in with your fingers!
Our favourite is their signature Mutton Briyani ($7) but do take note that they have very limited stock of mutton everyday so be there early, preferably before the lunch crowd as Mutton Briyani is usually sold out after lunch time. The mutton tasted very strong, flavourful and tender. People who loves mutton would agree that, “the stronger the mutton taste, the better it is” so you should really try this Mutton Briyani. The rice was flavourful as the spices were evenly distributed and almost each grain was close to uniform in colour. We really enjoyed the rice as it was not oily at all. The rice came with a dollop of pineapple-cucumber pickles which was appetizing and a great “starter” to our greasily unhealthy affair with the mutton. The curry is also robust enough to make eating the curried rice alone a nice enough meal.
Besides their high-in-demand Mutton Briyani, we tried their Chicken Briyani ($6) too. Just imagine a mouthwatering chunk of super crisply deep fried chicken sat atop the fragrant rice. The chicken was covered with a crisp crust and the insides were so juicy and tender that we could not wait to get our hands on more. If I had the stomach space, I would definitely order two pieces of their fried chicken at one shot!
Although parking is a problem at this coffee shop, the 3 months old Downtown Line 2 has been a great help, making this coffee shop more accessible and convenient. The Mutton Briyani is definitely worth your time and effort running a couple of rounds more working off your over-consumed calories. It’s somewhere that I always go back to with my parents if we’re in the vicinity.
