Let me introduce you to Beef Up, a stall run by three friends – Jeremy (left), Ronald (right) and Rohaizzatd (absent). The three of them actually have a company that organises outdoor activities and adventure camps. As their schedules are quite flexible, they’ve decided to venture into the food industry. They opened Beef Up with the intention to bring delicious Taiwanese street food to our Muslim friends.

Jeremy’s mother, a Taiwanese, came up with the recipes for Beef Up. Beef Up uses as many Taiwanese ingredients as they possibly can, to preserve the authentic taste of Taiwanese dishes. They have spent a good amount of time experimenting with the recipes, and making sure that non-Halal ingredients are replaced with Halal ones, without compromising on the taste.

If there was one meat I cannot give up in life, that would be beef, without a doubt. We ordered the signature Beef Noodles ($6.50/$8), which features a thicker variety of u-mian, six decent chunks of beef brisket, some greens and a spoonful of salted vegetables. The aroma of the rich beefy broth made me drool. I couldn’t resist the broth and finished it in no time. I typically go for sliced beef, and was skeptical about the beef brisket as it is usually tougher. Surprisingly, every piece of the meaty beef brisket was tender.

Next, we tried the Chicken Cutlet Rice Set ($7). Now, would you look at that huge slab of chicken cutlet! The batter encasing the chicken looked very thick, but, thankfully, wasn’t. The meat was very tender and juicy, and tasted even better with the accompanying chilli sauce which was very spicy!

Braised pork rice is a classic Taiwanese dish that is loved by many. Beef Up has come up with a lovely rendition of it. The Braised Chicken Rice ($4) features braised chicken stew lying atop a bed of fluffy rice, a braised egg and salted vegetables. While the braised chicken was really tender and flavourful, I felt that the onion taste from the accompanying sauce overpowered the rest of the flavours. It delivered too strong of a kick to the dish.

Don’t miss out on the Sweet Potato Fries ($2)! The exterior was shatteringly crisp, while the interior was moist and sweet. This snack is packed with nutrients, apparently, so what’s not to like?
